Hi All,

Looking for some up to date information/help. I just learnt something about LAX the other day I didn't know, so I thought perhaps the herd has more nuggets of help for me.

I'm flying CUN - LAX (DL), then status run LAX - SFO - LAX (DL), then LAX - SYD (VA) on the 23rd of February. 3 Separate bookings. I'm going to have (likely) a lot of baggage. I'm expecting 2-3 fully loaded check in bags. I don't particularly want to schlep these from point to point, I'd rather my check in bags go CUN - LAX - SYD (and onto BNE). I don't need them in SFO or LAX.

What is the likelihood of being able to do this with Delta? If not, do I have any options to check my bags in early at LAX? Or not collect them and get them later from the DL left luggage place?

Couldn't find any up to date information on the forums after a search. Sorry to ask and thanks in advance.

Hi flying_duck:

I think you will be left with the luggage.
There is no place to store luggage at LAX - unless you are prepared to schlep these to an nearby airport hotel (which has free shuttles to/from the airport), pay for a day use (usuanly 0900-1700 room, freshen up, leave them there for a day with the concierge/bell.

DL will not check through to any other airline even VA unless its on a single ticket/booking according to this document:
Delta Confirms Through-Check Baggage Policy
This would be irrespective of what VA may or may not say because its DL you will have to deal with in CUN.

Are you on DL938 CUN-LAX arriving at 1052am?
And VA2 LAX-LAX departing at 2200pm?

Then LAX-SFO:

Lets say you have to collect luggage, exit airport, go to hotel freshen up then go back to hotel.
The earliest flight you could catch would be the 1400 LAX-SFO DL4886 but the latest return flight you need to be on is 1755hrs SFO-LAX DL4923 arriving at 1935.

If your flights are different you might be Ok but may be rushing at some point.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, it does. It confirms what I suspected, but that will be OK.
I go
DL938 CUN 8:35am - LAX 11:05am
DL4916 LAX 3pm - SFO 4:23pm
DL4925 SFO 6:55pm - LAX 8:40pm
VA2 LAX 11:20 - SYD 9:15am

I think it will be OK. I may have to pack lighter and it sounds like I will have to collect my bags at each airport. I have good insurance in case of a cancelled flight and no real urgency to be back on shore in Oz.

I appreciate the time you took to respond. Thanks again.

Your timing will be Ok. Yes VA2 departs at 2320hrs
If I were doing this I would pay for the hotel room so you can leave bags there

Of course There is a small element of risk because of the LAX-SFO-LAX flight. Last time I flew LAX-SFO I was delayed 8 hours due to weather.
Before you embark on the LAX-SFO-LAX flights just check the airport delays situation. Review whether you should go if there is bad weather or widespread delays.

I think DL4925 is the last flight SFO-LAX. If you miss that because of a delayed DL4916 you are screwed.

I've seen this service suggested on another forum: LAX Luggage Storage.com - For your baggage storage lockers at the LAX airport

They pick up your bags at curbside and return them later. The web site seems a bit 'basic' ... not sure how you know whether to trust them with your stuff! I've no personal experience but it might be an option.

Another off site storage place is here: Home Page (LAX 24/7 LOCKER RENTALS)

So there are definitely options besides hotels.
