Hi,

I have booked an AA award seat (f) from LAS to fly QF94 (j) out of LAX...

I am worried about the connection time a little... here's the flights.

AA776- LAS 19:35 to LAX 20:45 - T4

QF94 - LAX 23:30 - TB

They are separate bookings, is this too risky with the terminal change etc

FYI - I can change the LAS flight to 13:20pm, arrive LAX 4:35pm. This is all that is left for award flights.. It's abit of time to kill at LAX.

Any advice would really help.

That connection time is very doable but doesn't leave much room for error. It depends on how risk averse you are. If your incoming flight is delayed at all you could be in trouble. The transit from T4 to TB is a short walk so that is no biggie but if the plane is late, or your bags take a while to come off or the queues in TB are bad it might get tight.

Very doable, but is at my limits.

I believe you would be protected due to oneworld agreements should you misconnect, even on separate tickets. Not that it helps having to wait another day.

I walk from T4 because its quicker at the moment, however, there is a bus Airside from T4 to TBIT leaving from near gate 44 at 9:00pm, 9:30pm, 10:00pm, etc.

bugs can be checked through. that's an easy connection imo

Of course, I forgot that you could check bags through. I think with that in mind I would probably risk it. LAX is not a lot of fun for a long layover.

Thanks for replies... Serfty I have read about that one world connection fallback. Will look into it again.

Hey is there any need or benefit to ring & link the bookings?

So.. I'm still confused.. Keep it the way it is or change it to the earlier time & have a Sh$T load of time to waste in the lounge...

Risk it maybe?

I was going to do a similar connection back in November but connecting to QF12 which would leave at 22:40.

Its what is ticketed via qantas if you do (in my case) a Perth - LAS booking.

I ended up changing to a morning flight to spend the day at Disneyland, but by the time we fot back to TBIT it was 8pm and still took 35 mins to get our boarding passes as tey decided to put a trainee on the Qantas Club check in line :0

bags were checked through to Perth from LAS so no need to check bags and its a 5 min walk from terminal 4 to TBIT.

I was going to do the connection with an hour less and with an 11 month old at that stage in tow! Shouldnt be a problem.

Just watch out for Johanna the trainee at TBIT!!!

Ultimately only you can decide, you have been told it is doable but if you are that concerned then change it. I'd be comfortable with it as is.

And the average delay of AA776 over the past 2 months is 34 minutes, according to EF.

Edit: A paid F ticket on AA LAS-LAX is about $225, date dependent, for 60 SC for QF. Economy (O) is about $77.

You should make it OK, but as has been stated, it's risky if any delays, and the penalty is then a ~24 hour stay in LAX (but likely protected as serfty says). One benefit of taking the earlier flight is that you'll have no trouble getting a seat in the lounge!

BTW is this 1320 to 1435 or 3:20 to 4:35. ? Couple of hours difference in waiting time

FYI - I can change the LAS flight to 13:20pm, arrive LAX 4:35pm

It would depend on what I had scheduled the day of arrival in MEL as to whether I would risk a tight connection. If you had something uber important then don't do it. AA in LAS should be able to through check your bags LAS to MEL & issue you with both your boarding passes so all you need to do is make your way from T4 to TBIT then go straight to the gate.

Personally I don't like that tight a connection however I wouldn't want to hang around LAX for that long either so you could just buy a ticket on UA or VX LAS/LAX pick up your bags then checkin at LAX & hope you don't get any trainees. Then at least you've got some time to spend in the lounge.

I arrive from LAS-LAX at 6.20pm for the 10.30pm FJ LAX-NAN flight. Surely 4h 10m is sufficient!
