Larger tablets & Laptops in the seatback holder

Hey all,

Just had an interesting experience on board a domestic Qantas flight from Canberra to Melbourne. So I have a surface pro 4 (around the same size as an iPad Pro) and I know they can’t be held for take off as they’re larger than the safety card, but I always thought they could be placed in the seatback holder until after takeoff. On today’s flight I had to place it above me in the overhead locker due to it being too big (yet it still fit just fine). Was just before pushback so didn’t want to debate it less I get offloaded.

What do you all think? Have I been wrong all this time or was it someone taking the rule to an extreme

Basically, a device under 1kg in weight is considered to be secured if it is placed in the seat back pocket.

If it's over 1kg, it needs to be stowed in the overhead bin or other location (such as under the seat in front of you if not sitting in an emergency exit row).

However the crew always have the final say.
