I received this in an email a few days ago;

Dear Steady


The seventh edition of Langton’s Classification of Australian Wine will be released in September this year.

The launch will be marked by a range of events, including the most important public tastings to be held in Australia since the launch of Classification VI in 2014.

Classification VII Tastings will be held in major cities during September. They will provide a unique opportunity to taste Australia’s finest wines, poured by their owners and makers, among them many of our leading wine identities.

These tastings, and other events celebrating the Classification VII launch, will sell out very quickly – within hours or days – when tickets are released later this year.

Please register your interest in these events now and we will keep you updated. Don’t forget to let us know your closest capital city.


I registered interest in the Hobart tasting - I had a call from my broker within 5 minutes to say he had received my interest and was asking how many Tickets I may purchase - no one I mix with would go at the price (still to be confirmed but nominally $150 or $295 if including the exceptional range) so I wondered if any Tassie AFFer wine lovers were interested ( @Delectable Blue .... @Whining&dining come to mind :rolleyes:) My broker thought the Hobart tasting was likely to be early September.
 
I also registered (for Melbourne) but no call from my broker as of yet. Will have to decide if I can afford that sort of pricing.

It’s a lot more then I was expecting but no financial commitment at this stage. I have time to put a little away for it if a bit of OT comes up

Hi Steady, sorry for the delay responding to this. I've not been visiting AFF for a while.

Yes, I could probably have my arm twisted into going to the Hobart Langtons event. Let me know if you're going to go.

Early Bird tickets on sale now at a discounted price from the later public offering and expected to sell out quickly. If you miss out, the remainder will be released on Thursday at 3pm AEST.

Early Bird ticket prices are:
  • $300* for ‘Exceptional’ (access all areas)
  • $150* for ‘Outstanding’ (access all Excellent and Outstanding wines)
*Plus Booking fee

A limit of two tickets per person, per event applies.

Is anyone interested in taking two tickets off my hands for the Sydney event?

They are the exceptional tickets at $300 each and happy to do cost price.

Realised I’ve got some friends visiting that weekend so would prefer to offload.
 
Hi all, in particular Steady, Delectable and Roo (and anybody else in Tassie)

I have been threatening to come to Tassie for too long. I have my Velocity free return flight to book and have missed out on the Exceptional ticket allocation in Sydney.

Would you like to do a catch up in Tassie? I'd need a bed or sofa, and was hoping to do a walk and maybe one or two vineyards.

Maybe I could combine it with the Langtons event too, if the timing works out.

I need to book my flghts in the coming few days.

Thoughts?

Langton’s are no longer doing the classification tasting in Hobart :(

But very happy to catch up somewhere in Tas if I can

FWIW, I reckon my palate is dead after a relatively small number of different tastes, so the idea of tasting 150 wines is nice, but doing it in one session seems like a bit of a waste to me.

I attended the Sydney event on Saturday - I would attend the next one also.

That said, I completely agree that my palate wouldn't last even 50 wines, let alone all wines in all three classifications. As such, I kept my tastings to the Exceptional tiers, with targeted picks from the other two tiers. All in all, it was an enjoyable experience: plenty of water, good food (at least, it seems like there's much better food on the Exceptional side of the hall), and very proactive staff (cleaning up messes etc.).

For me, the value is that I get to taste up to 10k worth of stuff without actually having to buy the bottles. In this light, the ticket price is value for money in allowing me to tickle that itch. I can say 'yep, I've tried ABCDEFG...XYZ' - wallet busting not included. This was particularly valuable when I headed straight for the $1.4k Seppelt 100yo para tawny!!!!

All in all, I tasted around 30 wines. I was happy with that.

It's extremely good value in the sense that I've now tried wines I was going to buy a 6 pack of and will probably isn't what I like, tasted wines I should've bought when Uncle Dan's were doing the annual cellar release purging (with huge regrets of course) and tasted wines I've bought but gone straight to offsite storage. My tongue was done by the 30th tasting but kept going till about 4:55. If I was doing this again I would turn up on time, pace myself a bit better and drink plenty more water.

I too stayed until just before 5pm, though that was more a function of allowing my body to consume enough water to offset all the grape juice!

On this - any tips on how to cleanse the pallet and keep it fresh other than water? I'll be attending this weekend. I once spoke to a sommelier who took a can of beer to big tasting events and swore by it!
