Grandma and grandpa going through with a tube of toothpaste, are hardly a intelligent use of resources. (here in the US)
Grandma and grandpa would be a problem if they were associated with OBL and/or his mates and had a nasty surprise in the toothpaste tube.

Most analysts did say this latest incident would change the way we travel in the skies. No liquids or gels on board means no liquids or gels on board. Irrelevant whether it is grandma and grandpa or any eldrely person for that matter. We should get used to it. Our teeth can survive a night/morning without being brushed.

Or you can use the stunningly good toothbrush and toothpaste that comes in the airline amenities packs :)

Some hotels also give some complimentary items (if you ask), such as shaving kists, toothpaste etc. I am sure they will need to stock up as people taking advantage of this will become more common!

If you want informed reading why go here: Crypto-Gram: August 15, 2006 - several years of archives. This man tells it straight.

The non-transferability/name change rule, and now the carry on rules are a scam to help airline profitability. Now the no carry on rule - is used to get excess baggage for the cattle class loosers.

The use of a credit card is very good identification, and the authorities can back data match - and have a heap of data on you. Do not forget airport cameras, can review any 'dont know ems' once you are in the departure hostage waiting bays. Airlines love it - and they know 'A' graders with 100's of flights, are no risk.

There are patents on credit card jitter - basically a way of identifying it is your credit card (not a copy) , very low cost, and that you are swiping it, that is far superior to so called smart chips. But no apparent demand for it, because banks and airlines MAKE money off fraudulent transactions. A bit of a DVD stripe, could show an .mpg of you making a trademark gesture - far superior to a static photo that has a high enough false rate.

This could drastically improve airport efficiency and throughput, and revive lost business caused by those who avoid short haul trips.

In the meantime, airline deaths due to DVT, and Radiation (see Flying and Radiation Risk - full report ) probably exceeds any perceived threats. If car crashes to airport, and strokes due to pre-flight tension, higher still.

As stated, if you are in the country, and you and luggage are screened, all is good, except some paper pushing clerk trying to perform a 'no value added' task, designed by committee with a diminished understanding of what counts.
