Hi all,
I some how made silver class yahoo :) and I would like to keep it as most of us would....I have about 2,000 dollars and 175,000 points to keep silver I need 250 sc by 30 September, but when I go to earning page it just says they don't have flights except to Singapore LOl...oh I am from perth :)
any idea's :) thx :) also can children join QFF? and get points? :)

What benefits does silver give you that you would want to spend anywhere near $2000 and/or use that many points to retain it??

Could you just take up the current offer for cheap membership to QP for $475/year and get more luggage allowance, can you use different check ins and it gets you lounge access (which you don't with silver)?? About the only thing it probably doesn't give you is 50% more earn on FF points, but doesn't seem like you are doing a lot of flying anyway if you are struggling to get that many SCs??? You might also get a bit of priority seating or boarding or something but i have never rated that stuff myself...

You can earn SCs on flights on QF (and even Jet*) anywhere around Australia or our magnificent 1 Qantas Int flight per day to Singapore from Perth... Are you actually planning to fly anywhere before September, that you can enhance up to a different class or take a more circuitous route, to add more SCs or would you simply be wanting to do some flying just to earn SCs???

And yes kids can be signed up to QFF and get points....

I guess I want to keep it because I finally made it after 15 years from joining LOL...
great about the kids...
only can get time off in Aug/ September so planning one trip :)
can't work out points and jet* still new at it all
fly every year but take cheapest fare like tiger or air Asia only a member of QFF though.
:)

If you were to take out Qantas Club membership you could visit the lounges when flying Jet* and then instead of taking Tiger or Air Asia flights, call up Jet* and ask them to do a 10% price beat... Could be one way of doing things anyway...

But yes, having eventually made it to PS it can be nice to feel like you are retaining your hard earned status.. :) But don't get caught up in the status game THEY want you to play, if it doesn't actually work for you, and there are cheaper ways, like QP membership, to get some of or even more of the benefits than just Silver (such as lounge entry) go that route instead... Its like people getting caught up trying to earn points when people don't do an analysis and find that they are actually paying more by using points than if they just paid cash... Its the game they want you to play and it can happen if you don't sit down and look at the cold , hard facts of it...

So where are you wanting to go on this trip, Europe, US, Asia??? Its gonna take a bit of flying in Economy on 1 trip to get close to 250 SCs... Just you going or the kids as well??? I'm sure people here will be happy to throw a few ideas out there... :)

Hi fragrantblossom, welcome to AFF! :)
You may have nearly enough points and cash to get to Gold (if flying solo) with some judicious planning and a little help from some of the gurus who frequent this font of FFing knowledge. A major difference between Silver and Gold is that Qantas Club is included with Gold.
Check these out and work out if you want to go to any of the destinations that offer good Status Credit earns for your flying $:

Be warned: it is a slippery slope!
Take casanovawa's advice first and work out what you'd really like to achieve before jumping in.

BTW, I joined my kids into Woolies EDR program first to get them free QFF membership.

Congrats on reaching Silver. I hope you're able to retain it, but a holiday is always nice in any case. :)

Yes, children are welcome to join the program. While there's no minimum age for new members, a seat must be purchased for aninfant under 2yrs in order to earn Qantas Points for flights.

If all you want to do is get your 250 points by flying solo you could try booking Perth - Sydney return on a JASA and select one of the flights that route through Adelaide on either the outbound or inbound trip. Select a flight that routes through Melbourne on the other leg if you want to do it in one day. It will cost you 127649 points and earn 260 SC and 8701 FF. If you use Points & Pay it will get down to 72000 points and $522. if you could go through Adelaide on both legs it would cost a little more and earn 280SC. Going through either Melbourne or Brisbane is slightly cheaper but brings it down to 240SC.

I am doing the reverse in a couple of weeks ex Sydney, but I just used some points to upgrade to J with work paying the freight for the seats in economy. Cost me 30000 points to upgrade all legs.

Per-syd-cns-syd-per can be done twice at a cost of 144000 points and 900 dollars as a business class any seat award. This will give you 640 status credits. The remaining 60 can be easily obtained with a per - adl- bris - per flight in discount economy at a cost of around 500 dollars. I'm sure there is a cheaper way to get the 60 additional status credits however the 640 through the per-syd-cns return route twice is about the best you can get through perth

Sorry members life has been crazy @ my place ....thanks for your replies :)
ok kids have Qff membership thx to your suggestions on Woolworth card everyone :) I will be traveling with children but they are being payed 4 .... long story but the quick version, they are fostered and I can apply every 3 years for holiday funding. so yes it will be a holiday was thinking perth, sing hk Taiwan Hk perth ....haven't worked out the status credits yet. not sure about the jasa thing will try and do some reading this week :) thx again

Just in case you're not aware, signing up your kids won't help you get status. You can transfer your kids' points to your account (as long as they have at least 5,000 each), but you can't transfer the Status Credits they earn.

FWIW, I'm also mystified as to why anyone would spend money in a special effort to get to silver. The holiday sounds great though!
