Keep your car doors locked while driving at SYD

Yeah, dodge the upturned burning cars in my street and the riots down the road... ;-)

Indeed... one must protect themselves from the roving bands of Westies in your street Gordon :P

Locking my door is one of my "pre-takeoff" checklist... Some modern cars now have the ability to automatically unlock doors in the event of a serious collision.

I do believe if the airbags get deployed the doors unlock.

Our car auto locks once you drive off. Hopefully auto unlocks when you crash into something too, but I'm not about to test that theory.

I think it's a good safety feature.

Not sure it's really required in Sydney, but can assure, when driving or in a cab at night in Lagos or Nairobbery, it's 100% absolutely essentail.

The best bit in the article is that the attacker was wearing a high vis vest!! Maybe we will see him in the Perth J lounge soon?? :)

Be aware that some attacks happen before you start driving off. In which case, your doors would not have locked yet.

True that. IMO the auto lock should occur once engine is started and all doors closed, even on key insertion (well, fob insertion).

Stuipd thing is, if I drive off without a seat belt the damn thing will chime incessantly, but it wont chime a warning if the door or tailgate is wide open.

I'm a little shocked that everyone is so flippant about this - imagine yourself in the situation of the person who was car-jacked - and ask is security/safety so bad in Australia's largest city that this can happen, especially in an area supposedly so heavily policed. Add that to the bikie shooting at SYD and the ongoing issues in various parts of SYD and now Gold Coast / Brisbane.....

And if all else fails in the event of rescue required, we just pop the glass from a window to get in.

Indeed. And not just rescuers. In my first carjack experience in POM the offenders decided I wasn't getting out of the (locked) car quick enough and broke the driver's side window. They then tried to drag me through the window until they realised they were stopping me opening the door.

Locking doors was SOP there - most cars have autolocks. But they aren't everything. Will stop opportunistic thieves and importuners from opening doors in heavy traffic, and deters offenders aimed with knives, but if trapped by offenders with firearms, locked doors are of no assistance.

As this incident was at the airport I wonder if the victim was getting into/out of the car. A point of vulnerability and often inattention to surroundings.

Cheers skip

For some reason when ever I go to Sydney it always seems the next day the area that I was in had a shooting... Makes me wonder how long before their is a citywide riot in Sydney like they had in London recently?

So long as they bring a BBQ.



I lock the doors whenever I am in a car. Anywhere in the world.

What can we do. It would appear that our society has given up on trying to put a stop to corruption. The attitude appears to be that it is OK for one or 2 innocent bystanders to suffer as a consequence.

We are way too lenient on people who do not deserve to be breathing the same air as the rest....
