Lies, lies and more lies.

Unless of course my experiences are unique!

The worst airline still scored 70% on time departure, which isn't bad, IMO.

67.6% arrivals on time (Qantaslink) is pretty poor - thats barely above 2/3rds.

Reading the ABC article about the whole Rex V Dr Whoever, one person blamed Sydney air traffic for Rex not doing so well with performance. I know I've been on a few Qantaslink flights where the pilot has sounded pretty angry and blamed traffic control for telling them to fly as slow as possible yet this seems to be far less of an issue when on jet flights (I had it happen three ABX-SYD Qantaslink flights in a row to varying degrees yet I don't think I've ever had it happen in a noticeable way on Virgin - the worst recent event was going from being twenty minutes early to arriving on time). I think it was a NTL-BNE Qantaslink flight I was on once that went from an ETA of 20 minutes early to being 20 minutes late with the pilot blaming air traffic.

Does anyone know if air traffic really does pick on prop planes over the jets? Is it partly just that they have a lower minimum speed so can be slowed down more, creating more of an impact?

Regionals have poor OTP simply because they often try to land at weather affected airports without ILS capabilities etc, ATC does not pick on propjets, while their approach speeds are slower, that also means they can track closer to the airport for a shorter base and final thereby fitting into a traffic pattern quite easily. In Brisbane that often means joining final near Nudgee from the North and Eagle Farm from the south.

As a former ATC I grimace when I hear ATC being blamed for delays, the reality is its other traffic, ATC is just there to keep you from hitting them, not to play around with flights and delay them for fun!

The delays are determined by a computer program that is open and transparent to all. All company's have access to the data.
There is no discrimination between aircraft types (computer is not that smart!).
Delays are purely a result of number of aircraft wanting to utilise an airport mixed with weather and environment issues.

I don't like to look at arrivals time at all, since once you are in the air, you don't really have any control over your arrival time. Factors such as weather and other traffic come in, and there's nothing you can do about that.

.. but it can be good to know in flight.

Last Saturday I flew MEL-BNE return - flight time on the way up was announced at 1:40, the return was 2:05.

From this information I can deduce what time descent might commence and how long before the seat belt signs may come. With that in mind I can vary what IFE I may start watching, consider is it time for a trip to the lav now, when should I put my things away, etc.

Qlink not a good record.

It has probably been covered but is there any tolerence as in 5 mins either side and that still is an on time performance.

In my experience Q link flights arrive and depart very close to other airlines at regional ports and sometimes this can cause time issues as they are using prop planes V jets so maybe a little bit harder to catch up time.
