Emergency landing for Jetstar flight (Monday, 20 December 2010 )

After one of its engines failed a Jetstar flight travelling from Bali to Melbourne made an emergency landing at Adelaide airport.

The plane touched down in Adelaide a little before 7am, after pilots informed passengers one of its two engines had failed.

Carrol O'Neill, a passenger aboard the flight, noticed the plane suddenly descending whilst it was flying over South Australia.

“They said we were going to make an emergency landing in Adelaide as one of the engines had failed,” Ms O'Neill said.

According to a Jetstar spokesperson, the failed engine “was operating on a low power setting.”

Qantas, of whom Jetstar are a subsidiary airline, bought the A330 aircraft in 2008 and transferred it to Jetstar’s fleet only weeks ago.

An official report into the incident will be carried out by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.

Pesky QF aircraft making JQ look like they have as many engineering issues as QF!

Any guesses as to what's going on this time? Engine trouble seems to be abounding here and everywhere for QF (and in some places around the world).

In flight shutdowns happen around 1 in a 1000 flights on average, and the news picks it up about 1 in 10000.

The media confuse engine failure with 'precautionary engine shutdown'. Engines get shutdown for a whole bunch of reasons such as oil pressure problems, temp problems, overheat indications, fire indications, vibration issues, bleed air issues etc etc. The media report all of these as engine failure it seems. No big deal.

You mean in the same way that a go-around is reported as the fright of someone's life / near miss.
