Joyce: Qantas perth had to go

So according to Mr Joyce loss making routes have to be cancelled to stem losses. My question is why does this not apply to Jetstar.

http://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/community/travel-news/jq-gives-avv-8-months-60982.html

While Jetstar’s patronage initially lifted in response to last year’s woes, Mr Hall said numbers quickly dipped.
“During the past three years, we’ve experienced significant losses and this is forecast to continue in the next financial year,” he said.
“We’ve been able to offset losses until April 2015 (but) as this package was intended to act as a lifeline for the airport, there is no guarantee this funding will continue.

Qantas did cut J* to Nagoya so planes could fly to Hawaii. Iiirc, Qantas saved $100m

Look what happens when AJ abandons pax and ports: Emirates woos Perth high flyers with Skywards Gold fast track - Flights | hotels | frequent flyer | business class - Australian Business Traveller - his very own partner swoops on in and scoops them all up.

It's so nice to see EK getting everything they wanted and more from the alliance and QF getting SFA!!

Actually, that's not necessarily all bad for QF, if it stops people from defecting to the VA/EY/SQ camp, and keep them flying QF domestically. It's not as if EK & QF are competing heavily out of PER - mainly it's the QF code vs EK code on EK metal, or on own metal, EK vs QF to NYC. Other than that, out of PER, their routes are mutually exclusive.

From the article:

Residents of the mining capital can pick up double tier miles when starting their journey on EK423 to Dubai, although Emirates’ other daily flights from Perth don’t qualify. From there, you’ll continue to earn double tier miles on the entire itinerary on Emirates-operated flights, although Qantas flights from Dubai to London, even when booked as an Emirates (EK) codeshare, aren't eligible for double tier miles.

Translation: Double tier miles to DXB and beyond except when you have the audacity to want to book the A380 from DBX-LHR! With partners like EK who need enemies?

QF have stated that they think pax will use either EK or J* out of PER internationally. Me - i'm switching to SQ after 13 years as QF WP as refuse to fly J*.

I've already switched to CX, transitting to Europe or the US via HKG.

I agree. One more J* flight pair to SIN left, to help renew gold and because it was on sale and a friend wanted to go. After that SQ or even MH to SIN. I can see it now- PER-KUL-SIN, SIN-KUL-NRT, NRT-CTS, then all in reverse again just to go skiing in business class on OW. And it still works out cheaper and sometimes quicker than QF via SYD in J and CX via HKG.

Just flew QF77 this time last week PER - SIN. Flight was about 80-85% full. Hope they have these flights again for my next trip.

Didn't Emirates just reduce capacity to/from PER?

They have reduced one of the flights from a 77W to a 77L.

This has occured previously so it could be considered a seasonal shift of equipment.

Flew QF77 yesterday day FULL flight ok it was school holidays but by all accounts over the last few weeks theses flights have been ne'er to capacity, only downer on this is the J* back! also the lounge Sing lounge was full to the brim with the Origin game on, but the food didn't deteriate and those helpfull staff should keep there heads up high,,they do a GREAT job, well done keep up the good work.

I am in the same boat. I can't depend on Jetstar because I have seen them cancel flights at the last minute.

I no longer have any intention of booking anymore QF flights.. simply because I can't book any QF international flights from PER. There's no point paying more for a QF code share on EK. I may as well book with EK direct and save some $$$.

So that means I have to fly SQ between PER-SIN. Let me say that again, it's not because I want to, but it is because I have no other option.

Also, I cant' see any reason to maintain my WP status with QF. There is no F lounge in PER, no Domestic Business Lounge in PER. So I may as well spend $$$ with SQ travelling business class and earn PPS status. That will also give me status with Virgin.

I hope Red Roo sees your post - it's yet another example of the consequences of Qantas's short-sighted decisions regarding PER and ADL. Deciding to not even operate one international flight from Perth has and will continue to cost Qantas dearly, whether they realise or not. It's a shame.

Now why they don't reinstate a PER-SIN flight is beyond me. Even a 737 could do the trip.

I flew QF77 today. Flight looked to be pretty full. Didn't see many school aged kids either! Oh how I wish Qantas would bring this flight back permanently. I refuse to fly Jetstar.

** rant mode on** I am also Perth based and feel like Qantas has really let me down. When I look at the flights and lounges available to those of you on the east coast I'm jealous.

I will MOST DEFINITELY not be chasing Platinum One for next year. Those extra flights will be going to some other airline. I try my best to use Qantas but - internationally - no where to go.

I have South African friends who are WP - If they want to go to SA Qantas tells them to go via Sydney !!!. The same for me going to Asia - yes we can take you sir you just have to get to SYD or MEL first, we hope you understand. Now I have LTG I don't see any real value in chasing WP out of Perth.

Hey Qantas how about all flights from SYD and Mel to Asia, Dubai and Europe stop by Perth - now that would upset some of you.

Mr Barnett's just told us we are all grumpy - perhaps he's right.
** rant mode off**

Yes internationally Perth lost out and we are all still pretty shocked. I went JetStar for about 50 minutes of flying and I don't think I will need to repeat that anytime soon.

I flew JQ DPS-PER last week in 1A. Lovely flight, good service, plenty of room, food was ok. I paid $110. (JQ Price beat of Air Asia from $69, plus $30 for 1A, plus $15 food). Landed in Perth 10 mins early. 1A or 1C are great. No complaints here. Choice of 3 flights a day.
