Under the circumstances described, I'd probably be 'terrified' as well, if for no other reason than I'd know I was facing possible injury by having to use the slides.

Each to their own. A broken bone can be fixed. If you're dead, it's too late. In the grand scheme of things a consideration of a broken bone should be at the end of the list. IMO.

True

But it seems the aircraft got all the way to the gate. And some pax used the bridge. I wonder what precipitated the urgent use of slides, as you'd think it more likely they'd be used on the runway if the issue was so severe.

Anything could have happened in the interim though so this is all speculation of course.

Doesn’t the person have the right to own their own feeling of being terrified? Seems like you just want to pick on somebody.

adjective: terrifying
  1. causing extreme fear.
Yeah, she could have used another word ;)

As a law student, "ANU Law | current affairs | australia | chinese language | international relations | feminist", I would have hoped that she had a wider vocabulary and better judgement ...

AAP could also have chosen to not report so sensationally on the basis it seems of one tweet ...

Surely, if a post breaches AFF Community Rules, then report the post rather than making an attack on another AFF member? Is that how it works?

Of course any experience is subjective.

Person A described it as terrifying and the crew as screaming.

Person B described it as a little alarming and the crew as calmly but forcefully speaking.

Both are right as much as both are wrong and who really cares.

The gentleman wearing hi-viz in one photo had his backpack on. Actually will be interesting see the report on this incident and reason for the slide activation at gate while deplaning pax via aerobridge (if thats what happened)

It's actually a messy situation.

It comes up in discussion items, and it happened on a QF 747, fifteen or so years ago. I have a suspicion that the computer quarterbacks (i.e. us), will decide that it wasn't necessary at all, and that a normal, or somewhat hurried, disembarkation via the bridge would have sufficed. But, we don't know how much smoke or haze was present, or what the air quality was otherwise like. We don't even know for sure that it was ordered by the Captain.

As I indicated -

As a law student, "ANU Law | current affairs | australia | chinese language | international relations | feminist", I would have hoped that she had a wider vocabulary and better judgement ..." I would have hoped for a little more maturity and less emotive language BUT ...

My main point from the OP -

AAP could also have chosen to not report so sensationally on the basis it seems of one tweet ...

I would like to believe that the pilot/crew erred on the side of safety and that is why the evacuation was called. Whether pax were terrified or not, who cares, and it’s irrelevant. It’s about preservation of life. Welcome to the real world.

For all intents and purposes there was an emergency situation at the Gate. These things happen.

Once again, social media is awash with drama queens and attention seekers.

I saw an interview with a young lad on the news tonight who thought it was pretty cool to try out the slides "a once on a lifetime opportunity to experience it"

The gentleman wearing hi-viz in one photo had his backpack on ...
Can those pax who retrieve their carry-on(s) be penalised in some way?

For all they know the aircraft may be about to burst into flames and they are faffing about, potentially delaying the evacuation and putting lives at risk over material possessions.

So who else can order an evacuation? Assuming the Captain wasn't disabled do they have the authority to issue that order?

Cabin crew have the ability to initiate an evacuation if the circumstances warrant it. Once one door gets opened there's potential for a chain reaction.

Preservation of life comes above all else. So, there was a possible life-threatening situation, as it appeared to the pilot/crew. All will be revealed in due course I’m sure.

I understand your thinking, but I do think the use of slides is a very big decision to make. On any flight there will be elderly pax, and women with tiny babies. Shooting down the slides is a very high-risk activity.
