This thread is a place to share tips and recommendations for stopovers at Johannesburg O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB) in South Africa. You can discuss things like:
  • How to get from the airport to the city
  • Things to do (both near the airport and in the city)
  • Where to stay/hotel recommendations (both near the airport and in the city)
  • Your favourite JNB airport lounges
  • Any other destination-specific tips or "hidden gems" you've discovered that could be useful for someone stopping over
Do you have a great tip that other travellers might find useful when stopping over in Johannesburg? Add your suggestions to this thread, and your advice could make it into an AFF Stopover Guide article!

If you are looking for no-frills, but clean(ish) and safe overnight accommadation near the airport, try Emerald Inn. The last time I was there, it cost about $60 for 2, including a decent cooked breakfast.

It's not actually at the airport but there is a reliable free 10 minute bus ride. Ask at the Information Desk at the airport how to get to the airport bus shuttle station, its just a short walk from the international terminal.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I had a stopover at JNB a couple of months ago and stayed at Crowne Plaza, The Rosebank. I found this to be a nice area and it was fairly easy to get there using the Gautrain from the airport. As it happens, you can now tap on and off the Gautrain using a credit card, although it didn't seem to accept my Australian cards so I had to buy a Gautrain card (which was not expensive).

During my stopover I visited the Apartheid Museum, which was very interesting (and I'm not normally into museums). I thought it was well worth a visit.
