Jobs around the house before 6 weeks overseas

I love living in a 16th floor studio apartment with no mailbox. Just unplug everything and make sure that the windows and door are closed. Job done!

I have just done a quick google search & nothing showed up but I seem to recall a similar discussion several years ago & there was a bit of a "gotcha" with suspending private health cover?

I had at the back of my mind that suspension of membership might affect your Lifetime Health Cover premiums/calculations. Although looking at this information sheet it appears that a suspension is exempted from this...

Lifetime Health Cover

I know there's a question on the tax form... something along the lines of how many days have you paid for private health, and whether or not you've been covered for the entire year.

I simply make sure there is someone to look after the dog and collect the mail (a friend of ours lives 6 houses down, they look after our dog / mail when we're away and we'll do the same for them when they are away). We also make sure that there is no food in the fridge that is likely to expire whilst we are away.

Other than that we simply leave everything ticking over as per normal. Most of our preparations has to do with the trip itself, not our house.

Our holidays are usually about 5>6 weeks as it's not worth the flight costs for anything shorter.
We empty all the fridges and turn them off save for the plonk frig. ( which died while we were away on the last trip ).
Our holiday animal / property management budget is a minimum of $850 aud/week…….if nothing goes wrong...
Twenty bucks a head a day for dogs and cats , 40 bucks a day (mates rates..less than half the going rate) for the nags..
Freedom ain't cheap...

Clazgirl wants to get two dogs after our next trip..... it is going to bankrupt me in kennel fees...

Doesn't read much like a mates rate for the nag- Brisbane obviously must be a lot dearer than around here! Are you supplying the feed?

We are in the housesitter camp!
We need someone to look after the cat and then leave everything as is (including the wine fridge) for their enjoyment (in lieu of payment for their services). We usually get friends or recommendations rather than someone through a site or advertisement.

Don't forget the water supply to the back of the fridge. Seen them fail for many people when they are on holidays. Murphys Law.

We do the same. We have some friends of friends who still live at home with their parents who love the chance to house sit our place and they love our puppy Harry too, and he reciprocates the love, so we know he and the house are being looked after.

For short domestic trips, he comes on the plane, at least until September now that QF have changed their policy and require him to travel freight for $160+, which we won't be doing, so might need the house sitters more often...

Would this damage the ice maker?

Most fridges the ice maker can be turned off in the settings. the older ones, maybe there is still a button somewhere? its not like they are constantly making ice anyway.
Once the ice compartment is full it switches off itself.
