Daughter wants to go to SAfrica to join a volunteer wildlife camp for 2 weeks in July. QF63/64 arrives/departs late in the day and requires an overnight before meeting the camp coordinators who meet and greet at airport.

Looking for recommendations for JNB airport hotels please

There's a 5 Star hotel (can't recall its name) just a few steps across the way, but a much less expensive, still very good and a very close option, is City Lodge at the back of the parking area. It's a completely undercover walk straight out of the terminal, past the 5* hotel and rental car desks and up the elevator. Probably around $100-125 including full breakfast.

I was very happy with Premier Hotel OR Tambo Airport. It's not located right at the airport terminal, so requires a ~10 minute free shuttle bus ride to/from the airport. But it was about half the price of the Intercontinental and I thought the quality of the rooms/service/etc. was excellent.

I've stayed at the Southern Sun as well as the air-side hotel in the international terminal. I'd avoid the air-side hotel if at all possible. Over priced, average and had other issues there too.

Southern Sun is walkable, but also a free shuttle too which we took (arriving on the QF flight). Room was decent size and lobby restaurant was good. Much cheaper than the IC. IC I'm sure is nicer and is the most convenient.

The City Lodge is convienient and perfectly comfortable. It can get a bit pricey sometimes, in which case I'll use the Premier OR Tambo. There's a half hourly shuttle from the bus terminal next to the Inter Con. Otherwise the Protea is a good option as well (again, shuttle ride away). Protea has a pretty good bar/restaurant. The City Lodge is lacking a bar (you basically hang in the restaurant, which is generally quite good). Haven't used the restaurant/bar at the Premier but it looked pretty good when I was there a few weeks ago.

The InterCon is too expensive for me to justify given what great value the other hotels are.

We stayed at the Protea back in 2013. As already mentioned, it was a shuttle ride away, but good value for what it was.

I'm having Xmas Eve & Xmas Day at the IC JNB. Looking forward to relaxing and doing sweet FA before onward flight to NBO on Boxing Day. I'm told it's rather nice. I've used points.

If you don't stay right at the airport and if you are arriving at night as I did arrange a car and driver to meet you. On the drive to Sandton the car was approached from each side as we slowed for a red light and traffic. Once the 'approachers' reached the SUV the driver put the boot in and through the red and got me to the hotel without incident. Welcome to Johannesburg was the comment as I retrieved my bag.

I stayed at the Michelangelo Hotel for a week which was excellent with good security. It was work so not sure how much it cost but as a side was meeting with govt ministers and senior pencil pushers from neighbouring countries who wanted to 'buy' rollingstock. Alas, no brown envelopes so that meeting didn't go for long. (with the minister dressed like James Earl Jones in the movie Coming to America)

Resurrecting this thread. Any comments on a good hotel at JNB - good for me meaning quiet (not overlooking busy road) and with easy access to the international terminal (regular shuttle ?walk).

I've been to Jo'burg numerous times and have no ambition to stay there a minute longer than necessary, or further from my onwards journey similarly.

Thanks

We have stayed at the Protea which was quiet despite being near a highway and the airport. It has a shuttle.

On the last occasion we did stay at The Intercontinental just a short walk away but a bit more expensive.

I stayed at the Premier Hotel OR Tambo Airport in Dec 23 and can recommend it. Its a free shuttle ride to/ from the airport, no more than 10 min. Didn’t have breakfast or dinner so can’t comment on how it is, but rooms were of a high standard, clean and quiet.

The IC at Jnb is a very nice hotel and we have stayed here before but is very expensive!..it also has a very nice reasonably priced restaurant, Quills. In Aug, we arrive on QF 63 late in pm, and leave early next am...so wanted something cheaper so will stay at City Lodge Hotel At OR Tambo International Airport which is a short walk from International terminal City Lodge Hotel At OR Tambo International Airport · MSP2 Building, North Parkade, O.R. Tambo Airport Rd, O.R. Tambo, Kempton Park, 1627, South Africa

We might have dinner at Quills though :)

I did exactly that last time I was there. 😉

Just stay at the city lodge. Rooms are comfortable, there’s a decent bar/restaurant and it’s a short walk to Quills if you want something better. The IC is a blatant rip off. Use a travel agent, they offer good wholesale rates.

Or use points at the IC. I’ve not checked lately but it was relatively good value on points v $$s.
