Hi all

I have a flight NRT-SYD on JL771 on Friday overnight. I have tried to check the seat map on EF and that shows no F class so I have been trying to compare that to Airline Seat Maps, Seating Charts, Airplane Seat Plans | SEATMAESTRO.COM to see what quality the seats are and what seating options might be (yes I know it is a little late to be thinking of this).

I can't reconcile the configurations on the Airline Seat Maps, Seating Charts, Airplane Seat Plans | SEATMAESTRO.COM site and EF and also can't work out what type of seats I will be expecting.

Any help available?

Cheers

Simon

Can't comment of your specific flight but have done that flight before and had the nice shell seats, the new J seats that is. Not sure if thats what is used all the time or just the flights i did.

Thanks - that was my major concern. I am assuming that with OWE I will get a resonable forward aisle seat or a window which on a 2-3-2 config isnt the end of the world.

If you do get one of the other planes you will find that there is plently of space, but its no bed. Just old seats. Unless your especially tall you should find comfortable. (But each to his own)

Some of those older configs really do have some intersting interiors ! funky 80's kind of graphics on the walls etc.

Hello Simongr

JL771 NRT-SYD is scheduled to be operated by a 747-400 with the Skyluxe seat in Business (cradle seat).

Evan has mentioned that he has received the new shell seats on JL771 - always possible if JAL sub in an aircraft with the new Shell seat.

I will do some digging for you and will report back on what I find. I will try and get the aircraft configuration (eg. S03 or K05) that you can expect on your flight. I also have the ability to check the rego of the aircraft operating your flight, but I doubt that it would be of much assistance (as AFAIK there is no website showing all of JAL's 744s and their configurations - like the QF Fleet website). I'll see what I can get though...

Cheers,
WD

can you report back on your thoughts on the skyluxe seat simongr, as im thinking of using them to combine Japan and Europe on one of my trips next yr and its the only thing holding me back.

Travelguru, you could always combine Japan and Europe by going QF/BA instead of JL if you aren't happy with the JL seat. I don't know what sort of business class seating BA will have on their flight between Japan and UK though.

Frack - that is the worst possible outcome :(

Looks like I might be checking to see if D is available on the QF flight. That cradle seat looks like a dog :(

Yet another reason to avoid JL despite them being OW

Man I am so stupid sometimes :( If I had researched this better I would have never picked those flights - this is so frustrating with JL that it is so hard to know what to expect from them. This will be my last JL flight I think. A poor experience last time I flew and this rubbish seat to look forward to. Frankly all JL seem to be good for is a shower and a massage out of NRT

Moreover the services to Australia are meant to be JALways, the low(wer) cost arm which has the rather unfortunate designation of JO. Most flights are 'JL for JO' which essentially means the services are contracted back to JL. You may or may not infer lower service quality from all that.

744 ops. I don't think they've got too many non-NGCWed 744s left. But IMO even the older Club World seat is more comfy than the JL shell seating.

According to this: FlyerTalk Forums - View Single Post - Club World Guide - Which routes have the new Club World cabin , you have a 68-94% chance of getting NCGW LHR-NRT depending on what flight number you pick.

The NRT Australia route is operated by Jalways so an old J seat and no F.It is possible to get a substitution but uncommon.Row 7 is the exit row so more legroom.7D and I think F are in the midlle. If alone i prefer the middle seat as noone going to climb over you.
I havent had bad service with JAL having done BNE-NRT-JFK with them at least 8 times now.But the lack of status bonus with AA means this next trip is also my last.

If you are happy with the schedule and the service, then you may be able to book the QF codeshare flight number (e.g. QF360) and then you will earn the status bonus. of course it depends on whether the fare you want to purchase is being sold by QF using the codeshare flight number.

A QF fare is way above the JL D fare we usually get.Until the end of March AA have a special D fare on this route which is only a couple of hundred above the JL fare and it does use the QF codeshare so if this is extended I may use that. Also gives me a chance to use the Evip's I am expecting next month.

As you travel regularly to the USA, it may also be worth considering buying a DCIR22 when you are in the US and nesting it inside the JL or AA D fare. An ex-USA DCIR22 is only about US$5400 and with the weak US$ that could be very attractive if you plan more than one trip each year.

Thanks.Great advice.I have been looking at combining with an AA DONE4 out of NRT but the DCIR22 would be ideal some times combining with the AA D fare if it continues.

Well the email came through from EF that there was some D availability on QF136 so I jumped on line checked my booking and it still showed as waitlisted so I checked on EF and it was D9 so it didnt seem like D1 had opened and someone else had waitlisted ahead of me so I called QF and initially there was "Sorry no" - but then I was put on hold and she came back with the good news :D So I am home a little earlier, have a SKybed rather than cradle seat and might even get a second express inbound immigration card :D

Another win for AFF/FT

If it hadnt of been for AFF I wouldnt have known about the rubbish seats or have had an EF subscription to tell me of the availability. Mind you if it wasnt for AFF I wouldnt be on a DAS13 ;)

Cheers guys

Congratulations Simongr. That's excellent news - well done!

Just to let you know, JL771 NRT-SYD 23/11 is scheduled to be operated JAL 747-400 JA8075 (K13 configuration). This aircraft is configured 12F/69J/300Y and features the SkyLuxe seats in Business Class.

So as you can see this aircraft features the older product (which mainly flies NRT-JFK-GRU AFAIK). At least you know what to expect now on NRT-SYD services!

Once again congrats on getting a seat on the Qantas flight.

Cheers

Thanks - sadly I was really looking forward to flying JL when they joined the alliance but with the lack of status bonus and that a/c on the NRT/SYD run I dont think I will fly them.

Now if only QF operated a 3-class service on this flight ;)
