JFK-BOS cut?

LIRR Penn Station to Jamaica is more expensive but ½ hour faster ...

Guess it depends where you are staying in Manhattan, factoring in the time to get from Lower East side to Penn Station (vs using the subway stop on the corner) brings the time difference for me down to about 10 mins. Then again my travels to NY are always leisure trips so never in too much of a hurry, likely different if its a business trip.

Getting to/from the city wasn't an issue. It was just an absolute toilet of an airport that I was very glad to get away from.

Your intel must be old. They've pretty much rebuilt the entire airport from the ground up, spending 8 billion dollars on it. It's still going - but the part that is open (I used it just after it opened) is really quite nice.

LIRR/airtrain for JFK is a little more expensive than subway/bus for LGA but more efficient.
I don't do Uber / Taxis / etc unless there is no other reasonable choice.

Each to their own, I find Uber from Manhattan to LGA is easy and quick. If either airport had a direct train/subway from Manhattan I'd use that, but I'm not going to be bothered carting luggage on multiple modes of public transport.

When were you last there? It’s pretty good now and easy to get to from Manhattan.

I was at LGA 3 weeks ago after flying in on UA. To get a cab we had to queue (in arctic weather conditions) for a bus to take us to the taxi holding area which was absolute chaos. There is substantial road works underway in the area as well. Add in the usual New Yorkers rushing and pushing and it was most unpleasant.

Well there's your problem.... :D

And get Uber in NYC. It's slightly more expensive than a cab but no (long) waiting. Never had a bad Uber experience in NYC (but they are priced higher than cabs - it's not the cheap option that Uber is here).

You FWIW, AA just rescheduled my direct JFK-ORD flight in April to over 4 hours later, and seems to now only be operating one direct flight per day on this route. Since I am locked into separate travel arrangements to JFK, this means I have even more time to burn at JFK.

I guess they are freeing up space in T8 for the remaining oneworld flights in T7 to move across.

i'm just catching the Acela Express - 3.49 hours
v.v. 45 min taxi, 1.5 hr at airport, 1,5 hr flight, 3 mile walk at Logan to collect bags, taxi into Boston

This article explains that AA voluntered to suspend 27 slots during the summer work at JFK but that they plan to increase some BOS flights later in the year (Table in the article).

That article isn’t 100% accurate. The JFK cut predates the 737 max grounding.

Subway to Howards Beach or Jamaica + Airtrain for $7.75 my preferred method to get JFK - so easy.

Works too, I did it a few times.

LIRR Penn Station to Jamaica is more expensive but ½ hour faster ...

Subway was faster than the Qantas transfer I organised! But it still takes so long. Going LIRR next time.
I see there is a flat rate taxi US$52? Haven't looked much further into that. Travelling with partner next time so may try that depending on the LIRR experience.

I don't know anything about cuts, but I'm astounded to find out that wanting to connect from QF11 JFK-BOS with AA mid Sept means sitting around until 11pm. QF11 arrives into JFK at 4.40pm.

The other thing I've learnt is that QF can only print three flights per bag tag .... so BNE-SYD-LAX-JFK-BOS means 2 tags per bag and apparently this is something to be avoided unless you want your bags to disappear into a JFK blackhole for a few days/weeks.

I think a single bag tag should do: SYD, JFK,BOS, I don't think LAX will be printed on the tag since it's a "direct" flight. I rmember doing MEL-SYD-JFK-YUL a few years ago with a single bag tag.

If I'm wrong and you end up with 2 bag tags you can always rip them off after customs and ask the transfer desk to reprint the tag to BOS because it fell off your bag...;)

True, but I'm thinking flying another carrier to avoid the 6+ hour transit is probably the better idea.

Like the OP I'm surprised with the limited flights AA have between these two ports. One flight in a 6+ hour window, midweek afternoon/evening 5 months out.... maybe it's as simple as AA just don't make any money on this sector.

FWIW, given the minimal AA flights, long connection and the risk of booking other airlines - seperate PNR, no protection for late arriving QF11, etc, etc

I got a quote for car/driver service for JFK-Boston. Cadillac Escalade would be $550 .... picked up at JFK and dropped off at your hotel in Boston. There's two of us, so the comparison over purchasing two J tickets is reasonable.

This is how we're get around the AA cuts on this sector.

Are you hard up flying QF to JFK? I would think you should be able to fly AA LAX-ORD-BOS or something like that.

These are award flights.... have thought about changing SYD-LAX to DFW. Probably should check out some of these options before making a call.

Did my checks, going via DFW or LAX doesn't make much of a time difference, but it is a whopper more in cash. We're only in the States for 10 nights and need to be in three locations - Boston, Saranac Lake, NYC... so it's a car ride for us.

Let's hope the drive is a scenic one. I'd drive myself, but after departing BNE and flying F and J all the way to JFK - I won't be in any state to drive ;)
