I'm about to fly on Jetstar for the first time on a last minute flight. Unfortunately it's the difference of about $350 between flying QANTAS/Virgin and flying JetStar to a nearby city and then hiring a car from Hertz for a one way journey.

What's their cabin baggage policy? Can you get a bag onboard without them trying to weigh it? I've got a laptop bag which I can get about 10kg into - more than the 7kg that they allow. Anyone been stopped on Jetstar and had their cabin baggage assessed?

It seems to depend on your check in city in my experience. Jetstar in Cairns seem to be very strict. I have seen them make several people take things out of there cabin baggage and put it in check in bags if the cabin baggage was overweight. They also seem very keen to collect excess baggae fees in Cairns.
I haven't noticed them to be as difficult to get along with at Brisbane, Mackay or Rockhampton.
I think Jetstars Cairns check in staff are probably the least flexible I have come across.

Jetstar are overall very strict about every policy they have from checkin times to baggage (hence why most people try to avoid them). Safest bet is to make very sure you don't go over your limit when packing
