Trying to arrange to get my mum back from Canberra to Brisbane or Gold Coast on Sunday 16th Oct. There doesn't seem to be many options with classic rewards direct and business class. She will also have more than 20kg (coming from overseas the day before), so that is another issue. I did a search on Qantas website for reward flights and the best option might be this one:

Canberra 13:25
Melbourne 14:35
QF1519
1h 10m
Business
Flight QF1519 is operated by Qantaslink - National Jet Systems

Melbourne 16:15
Gold Coast (Coolangatta) 17:15
JQ444
2h 00m
Economy
Flight JQ444 is operated by Jetstar
Total duration 4h 50m

Now my question is if I book the above flight:

1) Will she have to collect her bags in Melbourne, or can she request they be put through all the way to Gold Coast? (given one flight is QF and the other is JQ).

2) Canberra to Melbourne will be in Business, so she will be able to check in 2x32kg from my understanding? However the flight with Jetstar would only be 20kg as it is Economy? As the bags are checked in at Canberra with the business ticket, will the weight be an issue for the second flight? She is planning to have one suitcase around 25kg. I think the Jetstar allowance for Economy is only 20kg?

3) Can you purchase additional luggage on a classic rewards flight with Jetstar? If so where can I find the prices?

Thank you everyone!

Hi. I believe that you have to collect luggage and rebook in Melbourne
And From personal experience I would not think the very long walk from one terminal to other with luggage then 1+ km walk to JQ gate is going to be pleasant for her.

There are numerous direct CBR-BNE flights available on the 16th Oct, surely one of them would have a business class seat for sale if the luggage allowance is a non-negotiable.

If you absolutely must use points, I can see some Qantas Classic Business Class rewards via Canberra for approx 29K QFF points, not sure if Virgin Velocity have much availability on that date but might be worth a look.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

If you're after business class seats, some of the Qantas flights are on the 717's which are economy seating only - which looks like to be those operating on 16 Oct. For a bus class seat on the E190's, you're looking at $1100 one way (welcome to the Canberra tax).

Virgin seems to be a better option, with the 737's, with business class for $550, although there are some points seats available.
