Jetstar introduces Brisbane to Melbourne service | The Courier-Mail

Jetstar chief Bruce Buchanan said the plan was for two Brisbane-Melbourne and two Brisbane-Avalon flights a day.

Looks like Jetstar is realising that people do not want to arrive at AVV, but instead want to arrive at MEL. Does improve the Jetstar offering substantially, but as there are only 2 flights per day, doesn't really pose a threat to Qantas and Virgin Blue.

Main reason for this move is Tiger Airways on the route with 3 per day come March, not because Avalon numbers are falling. Hopefully they both increase frequencies leading to Virgin to pull its prices down.

There is also a limited time Jetstar sale on to celebrate the launch

To celebrate, we have some fantastic fares on sale for only $49. Sale fares are available on flights departing both Melbourne's Tullamarine airport and Melbourne's Avalon airport to Brisbane. But you will have to be quick this super sale is only for 4 hours between 8am - 12 noon (12:00 AEDT) today, Monday 14 December 2009, unless sold out prior.

One traditional concern was that of cannibalisation of Qantas higher margin business. I think that the market has now progressed past this point as Tiger and Virgin are going to take it if Jetstar doesn't act to keep it within the Qantas group.

I was personally critical of the time it took for Qantas group to respond to the VB challenge. But now they are leveraging that Jetstar investment against Tiger and VB - sweet.

Obviously, Jetstar are looking for a FIGHT with this: (From Today's Herald-Sun newspaper, page 7)

Just tried searching for flights and was reminded by a Jetstar popup that "flights for this market do not start until 1 July, 2010."
