Just a query as to experiences others have had with JQi checked baggage restrictions.

As related in a previous post http://www.frequentflyer.com.au/community/your-questions/no-meals-drinks-11051.html I was annoyed at the fact that JQi no longer provide any inclusive food/drinks to those travelling on a JQi-operated QF award with a QF flight number, as I experienced from Sydney to Osaka.

However, to annoy me even further, on the return JQi flight (Osaka to Sydney via Brisbane), they strictly enforced the 20kg checked baggage limit and tried to impose excess baggage charges on me. I checked closely and they were doing this to each and every passenger with any baggage over 20kg, blanket rule, no exceptions or discretion applied.

I realise that it is clearly stated in JQi's terms and conditions, however I thought they may have at least have had some discretion. Perhaps I have just been lucky in the past. I have travelled many times above the prescribed limits with QF, Air NZ, Air Pacific, Lufthansa, Air Canada, Japan Airlines, Cathay Pacific etc and have never been asked to pay (within reason, single suitcase a few kg over).

The resultant with the return flight from Osaka to Sydney (JQi) was that I ended up lugging around 25kg (3 bags) in carry-on baggage onto the aircraft (they didn't question that, or it was too late as I had passed through security and check-in had closed-off), and then lugged it off and on again in transit at Brisbane. So much for safety or passenger comfort concerns!

Jetstar selectively chooses when it wants to be associated with QF. eg: In Japan, all of their marketing/advertising boldly shows "A Qantas Group Airline", leveraging off the QF brand, yet they then turn around and punish loyal QF customers - treating them as though they are a first time customer.

In this case I chose to use my QF awards on JQi as that was the only direct way to get from Sydney to Osaka, however next time I will certainly consider CX via HKG or JL via NRT rather that the pathetic excuse for an airline (JQi).

JQi - never again.

JQ/JQi are an LCC and most strictly enforce baggage limits - they bank on a certain %ge paying the charges and some computer systems don't allow overrides whatsoever

When QF fares to Tokyo come down to JQi fares to Osaka you may have a right to complain, until then you got what you paid/ used your points for

I was going to Osaka so I had no other option when considering to fly direct, as QF no longer fly there.

In any case, it is the same amount of points required for an award SYD-KIX (JQi) as it was for QF prior to them abandoning the route, and same as SYD-NRT on QF; so it is not a case of getting a service commensurate with points used.

Whilst I sympathise with your situation of having to use onestar due to no other remeption routings to KIX, theyve been around long enough that I don't think one can expect anything different from them.

Whilst it is ludicrous to charge excess for anything over 20kgs in checked luggage, then allow someone to carry on 25kgs, it sounds like you managed to avoid the excess baggage charge anyways.

What's the beef here?

Inconsistent approach to baggage allowances by the airline industry? Dilution of service on QF award flights to destinations served only by Jetstar?
