I think it's absolutely awful what CX has managed to get away with in Hong Kong... and I'm not just saying that because I'm a Qantas fanboy! :p

Seriously, if they don't want competition over there they shouldn't be able to fly into Australia as much as they do, and yes I know slots into Australia are completely different to government approval for JQ HK, but perhaps a little pressure over here would hit them where it hurts.

I'm no CX apologist but you don't think Qantas would do the same if the roles were reversed? They recently objected to the extra capacity being granted to foreign airlines coming to Aus. Imagine if CX (or anyone foreign non EK) wanted to setup a domestic/regional airline in Australia. All hell would break loose.

What goes around comes around in the airline game.

Given the general antipathy to Jetstar, I don't think many people will care.

They are probably thanking Cathay for wasting QF's money to teach them a lesson.

It was never going to be easy trying to pry into this market. Retaliatory measures at the Australian end is neither productive nor will it be supported in any way, regardless of lobbying, by the government, let alone the current one.

The approval hearing has entered final stages a few weeks ago...I expect to see JQ HK take to the air this year, this delay has been well lobbied by CX but they cannot be seen to have stymied investment from the mainland in MU. In addition Pansy Ho would not have got involved and stayed involved for so long without a guarantee of movement within the HK government.

CX has been playing for time as they will suffer pressure to some of their more profitable intra asia routes as the local LCCs ramp up, I wouldn't rule out KA being relaunched with a lower cost structure to combat the LCCs without CX having to lower their yields in a fare war.

*cough* Tigerair Australia *cough*

Exactly what I was going to bring up below.

*cough* Tigerair Australia *cough*

Cough again. Virgin Australia move up market with money from ????? Cough cough.

Tiger launched here without VA's help... and VA isn't even wholly Australian-owned as it is!

There's already domestic airlines in Australia that weren't controlled by Australia...

Maybe I'm being pedantic but no domestic airline is controlled by Australia.
