Can anyone tell me which gates J* typically use at MEL T1 ? Or is it completely random.

Thanks

IIRC 25, 26,27,28, and 30, i.e. the far end of the newish pier for most but it does vary, the Melbourne Airport site lists current schedules and there are a few gates 1, 8 and 9 scattered in there for today.

Thanks markis, so the walk from the QP would be 10 mins I'm guessing ?

The normal area is maybe up to 10 mins from the J/L and the far reaches of the QP; 7-8 mins from the northern ends.

I would suggest not being in a huge rush - the area generally used by JQ was originally set up to service a few TurboProps; now JQ are using it, it is not a very nice area with limited seating, little space and a generally poor atmosphere. ("Cattle Yard" comes to mind.)

Couldn't agree more!

Brace yourself, because come mid 2015, JQ will move into the new T4, and bye bye lounge access! (Thats of course if JQ doesn't plan to build its own lounge in T4). The walk from T1 to T4's remote gates will be quite a trek - wouldn't even bother! After clearing security at T1, by the time you found a spot to sit it would be boarding time and you would have to walk back to T4 for your JQ flight.

T4 entrance is effectively moving about 100 metres north (IIRC will be connected airside with T3).

No more than a 10 minute walk from the QP.

The terminal building itself will be closer, however the actual gates itself is actually further away, even further away then the current T4 gates. I've attached a diagram to show you:
