Jetstar Delays/Cancellations

Interesting to know that (if there's another JQd flight with available seats that day), the company "may" not rebook a traveller on QFd. (Of course, that flight might be full).
There used to be a policy allowing that but it ended about 4ish years ago. Sometime in 2016 the Customer Guarantee policy removed any mention of booking on other airlines and whilst I'd previously experienced it before that date, I've never had it happen since.

There have been some rare exceptions like when Jetstar stops operating on a route but aside from that they really don't book on QF anymore.

One realises that the QF group is probably trying to 'protect' its higher yielding brand (QFd) but if there are no further JQd flights on route X on a day and passengers have been delayed due to no fault of their own (weather, aircraft failure or other causes) and there are spare seats on QFd flights, surely it'd make sense to get the patrons on their way as quickly as possible?

If JQd has to accommodate passengers overnight, it's not just a pain for most booked who want to get to their destination, but additional expense for JQd and hence the QF group.

Unfortunately, this hasn't been the case. In some situations I've been in there have been QF flights leaving much earlier but they simply couldn't care.

Recently with the Newcastle floods, I had family members booked NTL-BNE but when the airport closed they decided to drive to Sydney to get a flight back out. In the first few hours of the closure Jetstar said no changes to Sydney but would give a voucher, about 10 hours later Jetstar changed their mind (allowing reroutes via SYD) so clearly decided they wanted to get people moving but by that stage, they'd already taken the voucher and booked a much cheaper flight on Virgin. I've got no problem with Jetstar and fly them all the time but if something goes wrong it's often quicker and less stressful to go find your own alternative and sort out the Jetstar flight later.

If JQd has to accommodate passengers overnight
99% of overnight issues are curfew-related Sydney/Gold Coast/Adelaide and so by the time they can't operate the flight the last flights on any airline had already gone.

I've got to give it to Jetstar, in places where a curfew doesn't exist they can (and often do) a service recovery late into the evening. Last year I had a flight back from Cairns to Brisbane and the plane when boarding on the way up from Brisbane to Cairns suffered a problem. They were able to call in a spare crew and found a spare aircraft to operate the flight even if this meant operating well after midnight by the time we landed in Brisbane.

The plane has strangely subsequently gone to AYQ as JQ7991, taking off at 1927 hours
As a result of the diversion of JQ950 to BNE instead of CNS (with the passengers from MEL rebooked on a later BNE-CNS service), JQ943 CNS-MEL has been cancelled due to no replacement aircraft)...

On Sunday 11 April 2021, JQ952, the 0600 hours SYD - CNS was cancelled.

JQ466 (0605 hours MEL - BNK) was also cancelled.

So was JQ408, an 0725 hours early morning SYD - OOL.

JQ574/JQ562/JQ566 (0910, 1120 and 1525 hours MEL - BNE) also got the boot.

JQ476 (1455 hours mid afternoon from MEL up to NTL) should depart 55 minutes behind schedule.

The 1610 hours MEL - SYD, JQ520, is another not to operate.

JQ525 at 1815 this evening from SYD down to MEL is another to get the boot. So will JQ822 (SYD - BNE) at 2040 mid evening.

JQ739 (1925 hours MEL - LST) is predicted to depart half an hour late this evening.

Continuing with Sunday 11 April, JQ916 (1630 hours late afternoon MEL up to TSV, A320 VH-VQJ) was airborne at 1810 hours so delayed arrival is suggested as 2053, 83 minutes behind. In its last eight days operating, this flight has been delayed more than an hour arriving three times.

On Monday 12 April 2021, JQ560 (0700 hours early morning MEL - BNE) has the axe, along with JQ562 on the same route (the 1120 hours). So is the late afternoon 1730 hours, JQ576.

From MEL up to SYD, JQ506 at 0850 hours and JQ526 (1845 hours) are cancelled.

I'm curious, you're really good a tracking all the Jetstar delays/cancelations. You don't happen to have some inside knowledge or are you just looking them all up?

Sadly, the latter. No inside knowledge (some might suggest 'no knowledge, full stop').

AFFer milehighclub who works or worked for QFd correctly pointed out that using the Sdyeny Airport website was not overly accurate, as it seems to record flights that were not going to operate a while back, or perhaps never scheduled in the first place, as 'canceled'. However the various other airport sites seem better.

It can be tedious looking through the airport sites as the way in which flights are arranged is not always optimal. For instance (and here AFFer flydoc agrees), the MEL site shows codeshares line-by-line (i.e. if a QFd flight also carries passengers from three other airlines and assigns each airline a different flight number, that will take up four rows even though it's only one flight).

Please don't mistakenly think that I capture every cancellation around Australia and every delay (which I only mention if it's 30 minutes or more upon expected arrival). Not possible! However if looking at a source, I try to show all cancellations across all operators for a particular day from that airport, as originally I only showed QF ones and that was rightly suggested as being 'unfair' on QF.

JQ735, the Monday 11 April 2021 scheduled 1025 hours MEL - LST (A320 VH-VFP) took off at 1121, arriving at 1215, 40 minutes late. It then formed JQ734 back to MEL, where arrival at 1345 was half an hour behind the timetable.

The aircraft had been earlier on JQ702 from HBA to MEL, arriving 16 early at 1019, so it looks like another A320 had failed.

The 1200 'high noon' CNS down to SYD, JQ955 has A320 VH-VFV and took off at 1255. Arrival should be 32 minutes tardy at 1527 mid afternoon.

Tuesday 13 April 2021 will see JQ574, the 0910 hours MEL - BNE cancelled.

So is JQ516 on the MEL - SYD northbound route at 1400 hours in the afternoon.

JQ566 at 1525 (MEL - BNE) is another, as is JQ526, the 1845 hours early evening MEL up to SYD.

JQ408 and JQ422 (0725 hours morning and 1610 hours afternoon SYD - OOL) also has been axed.

JQ513 at 1145 hours late morning, SYD down to MEL will also not run, and nor will JQ521, the 1630 hours on the same southbound route.

For some reason FR24 doesn't appear to have 'captured' the journey of JQ944, the Wednesday 14 April 2021 MEL - CNS first of the morning at 0605 hours, but A320 VH-XJE did not take off until 0756 hours, arriving at 1107, 102 minutes tardy.

JQ560 and JQ564 (0700 and 1355 hours MEL - BNE) was cancelled, along with JQ506/JQ510/JQ516 (0850, 1020 and 1400 hours MEL - SYD).

Also receiving the axe are JQ518/JQ526 (MEL - SYD at 1520 hours mid afternoon and 1845 hours in the early evening) plus JQ464 (1630 hours MEL - OOL).

This is where Flightaware comes in...

Another benefit of flight aware is they capture gate departure, take off, landing and gate arrival all separately (where ADS-B coverage permits).

Henrus, thanks. I had indeed consulted FlightAware. Agree it's handy when FR24 occasionally doesn't show a flight.

For technical reasons - lacks that QF 'ACARS' system or whatever today's equivalent is called - these tracking sites have particular difficulty with small turboprops such as what QF calls its 'Q200s'. Sometimes one is aware a flight operated by a small aircraft must have run late but unless it can be viewed on a website in flight, some of the information can be hard to find, or impossible. However, such flights only carry a tiny percentage of those who travel by air in Oz or overseas to/from here, so unless something untoward - we pray it doesn't - occurs, no biggie.

Thursday 15 April 2021 is to see JQ400 and JQ420, the 0600 and 1015 hours SYD - OOL getting the flick, along with JQ822 (2040 hours mid evening SYD up to BNE).

JQ605, the 0810 hours SYD - AVV has also been cancelled. There's JQd flights to MEL but the next AVV-bound one from Sydney is not until 1240 hours this afternoon, a lengthy wait. I wonder if JQd rebooks passengers to MEL and hires a bus for anyone who needs to go to Avalon Airport because they live in say Geelong and/or parked a car at AVV?

JQ217 ( the very late night 2345 hours MEL - AKL, Wednesday 28 April 2021) has been cancelled.

Today (Tuesday 27) the 1105 hours SYD - CNS (JQ954) was flicked.

On Wednesday 28 April 2021, JQ731 (A320 VH-VFK, the 0700 hours early morning from MEL down to LST) did not become airborne until 1128 hours, so arrival was at 1218 hours, 253 minutes behind schedule. The return flight JQ730, the 0845 hours, was at the JQd equivalent of a 'gate' at 1348 in MEL, 238 late, while its next flight was not until 1520 hours (JQ518, MEL- SYD) so that should arrive a few minutes early, showing how airlines can recover time with longer than minimum turnarounds.

JQ774 (1020 hours MEL - ADL) had VH-VFO, taking off at 1110 and arriving at 1146, 31 minutes tardy.

JQ515 (1230 hours lunchtime SYD - MEL) got the boot.
