Seems Jetstar have won the title of having the best wine in their 'Business Class' cabin.
This is the first for a LCC too.

Another world first for Jetstar with global wine award

Jetstar has achieved another global first, becoming the first LCC to win Best
Business Class White (Waipara Hills NZ, Sauvignon Blanc, 2010) at the
prestigious Cellars in the Sky Awards held in London, UK.

Cellars in the Sky is an internationally esteemed competition run by Business Traveller
magazine, which rewards the quality and innovation of wine available on
long-haul flights across 12 wine categories.

Jetstar’s entries were assessed by a respected panel of judges who performed
blind taste testings of wines from 33 airlines around the world.

The judges assigned 95 out of 100 points to Waipara Hills NZ, Sauvignon
Blanc, 2010, describing it as: “...crisp, fresh and herby with a hint of celery.
Not too acidic and not too much residual sugar. A good core – balanced, focused
and intense.”

Jetstar was also awarded second place for Best
On-Board Business Class Cellar. Jetstar’s parent airline Qantas scooped awards
in six different categories.

I think this is all more a testament to the fine selection of Australian and New Zealand wines there are compared to the rest of the world.

I know people have very diverse opinions and perhaps I have home bias, but I find that I can always find a wine made somewhere in Australia or New Zealand that I will really like.

It is quite profound when you think about it that Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Australia for that matter always offer a full complement of wines which are only from Australia or New Zealand (the only non-AU/NZ wine on the list is probably the Champagne). Wine lists from the rest of the world more often than not always feature at least one AU/NZ wine.

JQ probably managed this award by fluke. Not sure how they latched onto the particular winning wine that they selected, although in saying that the last time I flew JQ Star Class the wine they did offer was quite acceptable, if not a fine choice. Yes, surprising indeed. They must be bumming a few tips off QF because I doubt JQ would invest in a wine panel let alone train their staff to be sommeliers in the sky (ha!).

In the end, every carrier finds something they can brag about, even if the award is from 5 years or more ago. Big deal................

Are the wines judged by how they taste in the sky or on the ground? Because a good wine on the ground can taste awful in the air :p and vice versa!

That must be where the inflated Business-At-PE price revenue is going - the wine list!

Not sure about the judging in the shows, but when selecting wines for their lists, I know at least some airlines (perhaps most?) take that into account. Fairly sure I've read of at least one airline tasting room which is simulated to altitude for the purposes of tasting/selecting the in-air wines.

I've had both the Qantas wines mentioned. The Taittinger in F a couple of years ago, and the Langi Ghiran Cliff Edge in J just a month or so ago. Both very worthy wines!

I have no problem with JQ winning an award for their wine selection.
But for business class-sorry that is just a step too far:shock:

Is there much demand for good wine on Jetstar flights?

There's probably a demand for a lot of wine!

Keep in mind that this is just the J class wine (or Star Class if you are an old timer).

I'm not sure (and I don't think) that this wine is also served in Economy on demand in favour of small plastic bottles of rocket fuel.
