The Qantas Group has announced that Jetstar Asia will be shutdown, with the last flight to take place on July 31.

Aircraft will be transferred to support group operations in Australia and New Zealand.

That’s huge!!! Shocked about that. Will have a big impact on SIN flights no doubt.

Will mean QFs offering into Asia will be fairly significantly reduced.

Very short lead time. I wonder what options pax will be offered.

I’m not sure many QF pax loved being shunted off to JQ.

QF already interlines with SQ. Might even end up expanding now there’s no local competition.

Not overly surprising there with their dwindling fleet since the COVID era and very minimal recovery at best. The writing was on the wall when Changi decided to move 3K to Terminal 4.

It also loses the QF group's sole link to KUL. I wonder if any limited codeshares on MH from the Australian capitals through QF mainline will be applied for at the ACCC (and) IASC?

Any potential QF/SQ codeshares (if at all) will be extremely limited as they are largely direct rivals, and any large partnership will definitely get rejected by both countries.

Shame, I prefer to connect through SIN onto BKK or KUL. Can still go direct from SYD but the offering SYD > BKK or SYD > KUL not the same as SYD > SIN

I have a 3K flight early July as classic reward - SIN-DPS last flight of the day, flight still shows as operating, but I am thinking of whether QF would change me to JQ36 (pretty much same departure time) - I am concerned that 3K will start cancelling/consolidating flights.

There’s at least some connecting traffic to partners such as Finnair. We’re doing that in January. The QF connection was really tight, but JQ gave around 4 hours in SIN.

I can't imagine that a small bit player SEA LCC operator will be missed - the market is saturated as is

Nowadays the aircraft would be by far the most valuable part of that biz and will likely generate more revenue back in AU

The SQ flights sold on QF are way more expensive than 3K (or MH for example) to the point where the fares wouldnt be competitive.

Its a loss for QF FFs with a loss of reward seats to popular destinations such as KUL, BKK, HKT etc, also flying onward on SQ wouldnt give access to any lounges in SIN unlike 3K.

I think the move to T4 was the nail in the coffin sadly for 3K.

Have a flight next week SIN > BKK, still on at the moment, but I was in "planning mode" to get from SIN > KUL early morning Aug 23. The flight was there two days ago, but it's been scrubbed now. It was perfect timing to meet up with the SKN flight, bugger!

This means more capacity in Australia at little to no marginal capital cost at a group level = more competition for Virgin at the low cost/leisure end of the market.

Well timed for the revival of Virgin to the ASX.

Probably an ideal opportunity for QF to "Jetstarise" a few existing QF domestic flights.

Qantas really need a partner for Asia flights, their terrible relationship with Malaysian and Cathey basically means if you want to go anywhere apart from Singapore you have to book somewhere else. It's probably as little better on the east coast but at least coming from Perth it's just pointless to even check for flights to that entire region.

At least VA has Singapore who connects fairly well.

That's not to say 3K was particularly useful, heaps of their destinations were not bookable at all from Australia. Booking 2 separate legs is just way too risky for most passengers

Not surprising. For various reasons Jetstar’s brand is nowhere near as strong as Scoot’s in the Singapore market. Also not 3k, but 3kg. makes a big difference. Scoot runs with a 10kg carry on policy whilst Jetstar has a 7kg policy. Those extra 3kgs make a big difference, people know that and Scoot markets that quite aggressively.

Add in the fact that it’s $65.20 just for the airport charges at SIN now, makes it very difficult.
