Jetstar Asia to shutdown on 31 July 2025

Sadly, not a good enough reputation to sustain itself, it seems.
TR had an edge in the SG market as a subsidiary of SQ. But also they marketed heavily on 10kg of hand luggage. I would take TR over 3K for a weekend away because of this. Travelling with a laptop, easy to do with 10kg. With 7kg not worth the hassle especially if you don’t know whether or not it would be enforced. Meanwhile never seen any enforcement on TR of the more generous carry on. An integral part of the JQ business model so I guess they couldn’t change it for 3K.

I can believe you on this one.

But ironically, for the two 3K flights I flew last year, there was no weighing at the gate (or at check-in for that matter). Maybe it was a case of "if it doesn't look heavy, it isn't" or just got lucky. I thought I'd be a prime target as my backpack doesn't exactly look small (it was probably about 1-2 kg over the limit), plus I duly carry two carry-ons because one contains my CPAP (not that anyone knows that unless you recognise the ResMed mark).

Jetstar now pulling back Perth to Singapore to 3 weekly, and A320 only.

Rather token and going up against the behemoth Scoot who is twice a day, and are back to 787s.

I’d say Melbourne to Singapore should just be dropped. Just admit defeat TR are just too big now.

A flow on effect of the shutdown of Jetstar Asia, I wonder how long now JQ7/8 (MEL-SIN services) will last? It often carried through traffic to the Jetstar Asia network, but that has now all evaporated. It was cancelled again today, and that makes 3 out of the last 8 scheduled services cancelled (cancelled Mon 28th, Sat 2nd and Tue 5th).

I Swear, that JQ7/8 service is the most unreliable!
Is possibly the easiest of the JQ787 routes to re-route pax on to QF35/37-36/38 if fleet needed recovery. As opposed to services to eg.SGN, which dont have direct Qantas metal.

Shut it down and focus on boosting QF MEL-SIN services.

Yes, me too. Qantas (Jetstar) shot themselves in the foot by not being a little bit flexible and competing properly with TR.

However, I've never had my carry on weighed for any 3K flight, and I've taken quite a few. I think the local staff knew what they up against and didn't want to piss off their client base.

Agreed 7kg I always felt was tight for carry-on only given most decent cases are 3-5kg.
Unlike JQ, 3K was never that strict on the 7kg. Once big plus was their priority boarding that started with Row 1 and over wing exits, followed by rows 2-5 (preferred seats) then the back half and front. I wish JQ would copy that 3K method!

Is it a good time to ask why AK and its derivatives are not good?

Price pays for a  lot of sins, especially in SE Asia or when people need or want to move about by plane. The exception might be SQ/TR, since Singaporeans are the most fierce when it comes to looking after the interests of its national carrier.

I flew 3K last year between SIN and MNL/CRK (the red eye return from CRK was virtually empty, but ah well). Flights were perfectly fine (the CSM on the 3K flight to MNL was an ex-SQ FA). People thought I was crazy flying Jetstar Asia and some thought even more so when I told them that said airline had a much better reputation in its market compared to JQ in Australia.

Sadly, not a good enough reputation to sustain itself, it seems.

IMHO - Jetstar's big problem was loyalty program.
SQ/TR both seamlessly intertwine with Krisflyer.
All other premium carriers in the region have a proper loyalty proposition.
Air Asia's loyalty is beyond pathetic, but they're known as the lowest cost (even though they're not).
Therefore Jetstar Asia was stuck between being a premium version of Air Asia and a full service carrier in terms of loyalty.

Before anyone chimes in about QFF - Nobody outside of Australia gives 2hoots about QFF, and therefore - you'd only end up on jetstar if the cheapest option, or the best option were not available.

A standalone Jetstar loyalty program based in Singapore - to grow their regional presense beyond being a quasi Qantas feeder airline, would have made a big difference IMO.
