Jetstar Asia to shutdown on 31 July 2025

It only lasted as long as it did because of Alan Joyce - and it was a face-saving measure after the RedQ fiasco and after they cough the bed with the MH partnership post-Oneworld admission due to the EK tie-up.

It rarely turned a profit from its inception (and I think those few profits were tiny too), so it's rather disingenuous of QF to blame supplier costs, airport fees, and Bigfoot for the poor financial performance this year for ultimately killing the airline. Yeah, costs went up - but they went up for everybody, and when your starting point is in the red, it's never going to end well.

In a saturated market, they didn't offer anything special to put them ahead of Scoot (who had better carry-on rules, btw), Air Asia, etc, and it's hard to squeeze ever-increasing amounts of ancillary revenue when you're already charging for everything but the seatbelts in an extremely price-conscious region.

Poor management, or poor corporate oversight from head office? Either way, they won't be missed.

On the upside, Qantas can't get away with using 3K any more to pretend like they had an SE Asia "network". I suspect a lot of the old 3K destinations will be first in line to get the direct A321s from the eastern states.

The Board have to take some responsibility too for letting it go on so long....oh wait

Much easier to take a $94.50 MH fare. As late as a 9:25pm departure and much quicker to get from T1 to T2 than T4.
It's wishful thinking on my part but it'd be great if the powers that be at SIN decided to move JQ back to T2 in the absence of a critical mass of 3K flights.

It seems management have underplayed it but suspect the move to T4 was a big issue for 3K versus the other LCCs as they did actually interline with a decent number of airlines.

Plus for the domestic SIN customer, your local LCC user is also more likely to be taking the MRT to be airport rather than a taxi, and again T4 is a big disadvantage for that.

This all does beg the question what QF will do for onward connections - as alluded to earlier posts? A broad codeshare with SQ would be cool - maybe they’re not feeling the VA/QR love…😉

Some more JQ flights between Oz and Asian ports?

Expanding PJ codeshares - but there’s only so many seats into BKK each day.

Will we see codeshares on GA ex CGK/DPS?

Left field, QF re-starts up KUL

I was hoping for some PR code shares around the Philippines, especially with the new MNL and CEB routes announced.

Dare I suggest PR sponsored into Oneworld?

I feel for all the staff that just found out they no longer have a job with only 2 months notice. I wonder what the mandatory redundancy pay out provisions are for Singapore staff. (Can’t imagine they would be generous.).

A broader codeshare / FF alliance would be rejected by both the ACCC and the Singaporean equivalent. The most QF/SQ can do is to replicate the QF/NZ domestic/short haul deal.

The Straits Times in Singapore reported on this specifically here:

Retrenched employees will receive a redundancy payment of four weeks per year of service, a bonus for this financial year, a special “thank you” payment and other benefits.

Now a like-for-like replacement for 3K would not be a QF/SQ arrangement but a QF/TR arrangement. 🤣

Thanks for sharing, guess I'll be watching this page verrrrry closely!

I have a flight from Okinawa to Singapore booked next week and it's the only direct connection, flights on other airlines are coughbersome and often involve backtracking to the Japanese mainland first. Showing no changes as yet however flight shows as "Sold Out" on the website, I can only hope it's genuinely sold out and not them just hitting pause before cancelling it 🤞

Yes, that’s what I was pondering - pretty much the only option for keeping SIN a hub into secondary* Asian ports where QF doesn’t fly direct or has an existing codeshare.

*also KUL that has no direct flights nor codeshare

My understanding is Changi is not configured for domestic flights, just international ones meaning a flight from Changi to Seletar is not possible.
Well, there’s probably a helicopter transfer but it’s a 15 - 20 min taxi ride.

That’s not true, passenger flow for domestic would be not dissimilar to an airport worker, no reconfiguration needed. There is the occasional movement to Changi from Seletar, but no RPT given the flight would take longer than the drive by a factor of 2x

I’m not sure many QF pax loved being shunted off to JQ.
My mother within the last 12 months booked one of these QF>JQ flights to get to BKK as she didn't want to transit SYD and didn't realise what a shambles it would be transiting SIN. She vowed never again. Turns out she gets her wish.
