Japan overtakes the USA for fourth spot in favored destinations for Aussies

Nothing new. Got to put up with NZ and UK football fans screaming and making cough of themselves at a shrine in Kyoto during the world cup in 2019.

In what way does this differ from football fans anywhere else at any other time?

I think China market is a bit saturated provided there are plenty of Chinese carriers now flying to Australia.
Yet Vietnam is the one Qantas should be watching. There are not that many carriers flying directly from Vietnam to Australia and Australia only has Jetstar service to HCMC.
I believe there's space for Qantas to launch HCMC from SYD replacing JQ using A321XLR or A330.
Also HKG is on the rise - I hope Qantas can introduce a second daily HKG from SYD.

The bulk of Aussie travellers I know that go to Vietnam are more price conscious than those going to Bali I’ve seen. Seems very much a LCC route IMO

HKG I wouldn't bother with.
China going to cause huge problems there at some point soon, easier to just pull S#tstar when this go bad.

CX seem to be pretty competitive with their prices again, and no penalty to have a stopover in HKG. It's like the 1980's all over again.

China is really only starting up.

There's going to be significant decreases in pricing to goto Europe via China as they continuously ramp up their operations. The demand for just Australia - China is also only going to increase as long as we're in the good books for Chinese travel.

HKG is a mixed bag. We've probably seen a big decrease in travel to Hong Kong from the Australian end and HK based travellers will almost always favour Cathay over Qantas. Even if you want to be on OW and travel to China, a 1 stop on Cathay will almost always be cheaper than QF + CX.

Qantas might launch to vietnam in the future as more manufacturing moves that way but currently they don't even have the aircraft to serve their key routes. JP desperately wants 3 class planes like 787s as there is a very solid middle market to JP and the lower market is already serviced by JQ /one stops in China.

I think while true it’s entering the mainstream. A large portion of my clients ( which self select for incomes on the high end) are now enquiring about Vietnam, and the various intercontinentals are routinely 500-800USD a night.

We are probably going to spend similar to that next trip but we have plenty of good options to get there. I just can’t see QF making a decent fist of it and would rather see them utilise other SEA ports more

Agree strongly, they are just getting started, and the arrival of shenzhen airlines operations in Melbourne later this year is a sign of that. CZ and MU are already offering the choice of day flights as well as red eyes to many Australian cities and this will only increase.

Are the numbers just based on what people write down in the arrival cards?

Yes. As you probably know, the data has limitations.

For instance if one was in England for 15 days and then Europe for 30, but no single country in the latter for more than five days, you'd write 'England' on the arrivals card, as 'Europe' is not a single country.

However that's misleading as most of your visit was not spent in England.

Another issue is the statistician uses 'UK' rather than listing the four separate countries that make it up, but doesn't do the same for Europe or other regions.

The Rugby World Cup was on in Japan in 2019.
We stayed in the Conrad Tokyo at the same time as the All Blacks

The loud idiots being disrespectful at a shine was more annoying them dealing with the same idiots on the trains in Yokohama. I was going to an event at Yokohama Arena while they were going to one of the finals at Yokohama Stadium.

I actually wonder if the surge of travel demand to Japan would allow Jetstar to try launching Cairns - Okinawa?
Okinawa is 5154km or 5 hours 45 minutes away from Cairns, which it can potentially fits well with a domestic connection from East Coast utilising one plane or hook up with DPS routes which is 3 hours 45 minutes away from CNS.
It is easily within reach with a A321LR/XLR, and Okinawa has a lot of beaches and paradise like resorts.
Opening Okinawa would make transferring to Kyushu faster with its alliance with Japan Airlines and Jetstar Japan.

I've been to Okinawa several times, and it does have some nice beaches (not as nice as Oz IME).

It also has a lot of US Marines, which tends to taint the ambience a little.

Whilst its technically feasible, I'm not sure it'll be a hit destination for Aussies. The selling point for Okinawa is great for local Japanese and other nearby Asian countries as a warm, beachy holiday destination. Unfortunately for Australia, we already have that at home and we often go to Bali, Fiji, Pacific Islands and even Hawaii.

They'd have to have a very targeted push on Australia and it feels like they've got enough tourism as it is.

Also interesting note, Okinawa closer to Taiwan than it is to Kyushu.
