Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone knows if ATMs (in particular 7-11/Post Office ATMs) in Japan have ATM owner fees? I'm not talking about foreign exchange fees etc (I'm using a Wizard card) but a fee similar to the $2 charged in Australia when you use an ATM not from the same bank as the card you're using.

It's a year ago now, but I did not come across any ATM fees in Japen using my Wizard.

Agreed. Not once did I encounter a fee, though it was also a year ago.

i have a Westpac Handy Card, and would take out approx $650.00 AUD, and this was from 7/11's and ATM's and each time the extra charge was approx $20.00 AUD.
that was Sept/October 2009.

That's Westpac's currency conversion fees, ATM fees and their ilk in action. That goes to Westpac. (See here: http://www.westpac.com.au/personal-banking/services/overseas-services/using-atms-overseas/)

This thread's about paying a flat rat of several hundred JPY for the privilege of withdrawing cash. Those funds would go to the ATM's owner. (As per this thread, none have been reported.)

I haven't been to Japan, but I did have this problem in the US. Pretty much all the ATMs will levy a fee of their own on top of what your bank is charging you.

I withdrew from the Citibank ATM as Osaka-Kansai and no fee was levied. Japan seemed probably the least ATM-ified country I've encountered–at least ATMs that us gai-jin could use!
