Hi all.

I was curious if any one has flown in Y on the SYD-NRT JAL flights. They apparently have "sky wider". I'm most curious to know about rows 53 onwards. Are these 'old school virgin blue row 1 seats' where the middle seat is blocked out and you can stretch across?

Please let me know if this isn't the correct seat map. Also does anyone know if any aisle seats have the dreaded AV box at your feet?

Thanks

I too am intrigued by the seatguru claim that the middle seats are blocked and not for sale!

A little googling (actually quite a lot of googling!) found the following answer:

Japan Airlines (JAL) has finally uploaded the revised version of the new Sky Suite 777 seat map. As pointed out before, 8 of the seats will not be sold because they have less than the advertised 33-34 inches seat pitch. The only changes in this revised seat map is that it clearly indicates which these 8 seats are.

although, as they note, the site isn't quite sure why the centre seats have less pitch...

as a passenger, you'd want to double check you were on a W83 configuration and not a W84... otherwise you could just have a really bad seat!

I flew this route in Y (row24)in Jan. From memory the only empty seats on Syd-nrt were in the middle and down the back of the plane as you suggest. On the return flight all seats were full.
For Y these seats were surprisingly comfortable with good leg room. Remember to wear summer clothes as the cabin is hot. AV box didn't trouble us.

W83 and W84 are both the same config. Just one (W83) sells 8 more seats down the back then the other. They only sell those 8 seats on domestic flights.

JAL is phasing out W83 config. There shouldn't be any of them in service at this point.

Although a moot point (per JALPak's post) the W83/84 were actually different, with 4 more seats on the W84 (even after including blocked seats).

Thanks. Confusingly still listed on the JAL website. So looks like no advantages of blocked seats anymore.

Don't worry about the IFE box. It is not on the floor.

Mini trip report. In summary, big fan of JAL.

Flew out on JA731A, which I thought I googled was prototype 3 of the 777-300er. Very organised with a nice mix of Qantas and JAL ground staff. Got 51E which has oodles of room. Never felt so comfortable on a 777 before. Entertainment was a little limited - eg 1 or 2 tv shows rather than half or an entire season and for some reason half the stats are missing from the map. Food was excellent - I counted 6 different salads across the two meals. Cabin temperature was cold which was nice because I was expecting to be sweating on the plane. Was surprised to have parked at a stand rather than an aerobridge, but it felt like we got to the luggage collection more quickly than walking. Y1500 later and I was at Shinagawa (thanks to the soon to be discontinued NEX pass).

The AV boxes weren't a problem and none of the rows behind me had a middle seat free. The AC last row is probably a good seat if you can put up with the toliet as you are less likely to get bumped in the middle of the night.
