Hi All - we are looking at some flights on JAL, and for some legs have the choice of J on a 767 or 787. We’re after some thoughts on which is the better product. We flew J SYD-NRT return with them a few years ago, but I can’t recall the aircraft.

Cheers,

I’ve only flown the 767 and while I love the aircraft I have to say I found the J seat and suite quite uncomfortable and poorly laid out. That was a couple of years ago now though.

I’m sure there’ll be plenty of YouTube video reports comparing the two if you want to try that.

The JL SYD flight used to be a 747 and changed to 777 when JL got rid of their 747s. It is now a 787.

The last time I was on a JL long haul config 767 on SIN-HND a few years ago, I was able to sleep almost the entire flight.

J on JL long haul (most) configs are "Sky Suites", though the suite is slightly different depending on the aircraft type.

Their 787-8's have either JAL SKY SUITE (Seats) - JAL International Flights or JAL SHELL FLAT NEO (Seats) - JAL International Flights

787-9s are either JAL SKY SUITE (Seats) - JAL International Flights or JAL SKY SUITE Ⅲ (Seats) - JAL International Flights

The 767s are JAL SKY SUITE Ⅱ (Seats) - JAL International Flights or older recliner seats (JAL SKYLUXE SEAT (Seats) - JAL International Flights and JAL SKYRECLINER (Seats) - JAL International Flights)

You can also find a list of which routes are planned to use which type of seat via links on those pages.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Agree with Himeno - check the proposed seat type for your flight and choose accordingly. Full flat--> angled flat--> recliners. Recliners might not seem like a problem for a short flight (3 or 4 hours) but those flights can become much longer if there's bad weather or other delays.

I tried both aircraft about 12 months ago.

I wrote about the 767 J experience to HNL in this trip report.

The return sector to KIX was on a 787 and whatever I thought of it is about 20 posts further on in the same TR.
