So I thought I'd share a recent (mini) points haul that I've come across - a nice little earner for money that I was already going to spend!

This week, Woolies had 20% off iTunes gift cards... I'm always spending money on iTunes (mostly music, but some apps and occasionally videos too), so I decided to buy one.

Firstly, the $50 gift card only cost $40 with the discount - off to a good start!

I scanned my EDR card at the checkout, and earned 10 QFF points. I then paid with my Amex, earning 60 QFF points (1.5/$1).

As the purchase was above $30, I received a fuel voucher. Due to their other current promotion, it was an 8cpl voucher, which translates to 4 pts/L. On a 60L fill-up, this will earn another 240 QFF points when redeeming this voucher.

Then, when purchasing content off iTunes, I used the VA ShopandEarn link, which earns 2 VFF points/$1 spent (even when redeeming gift cards). 100 VFF points earned (and have already credited to my account) ;)

A total of 310 QFF points and 100 VFF points earned, for buying a $50 (but $40) iTunes gift card... nothing groundbreaking, but earning 7.75 QFF points per $1 spent while also earning 2.5 VFF points per $1 spent is nothing to be sniffed at! ;) If you spend more frequently on iTunes, the points earn is magnified if buying multiple gift cards on the same transaction...

Here's hoping for another discounted iTunes offer soon! Happy shopping ;)

Mm.. I've been buying iTunes credit for the extra points for a while but the VA earn is a new one I've been missing out on.

Damn. I think I've already spent $100+ on iTunes this year. I wish I'd know about this before now. Nice little earner. Thanks for the tip.

Indeed! A caveat of the iTunes VFF points is that you can only earn them when buying content on your desktop computer (by going to VA's site and following the link, which takes you to the iTunes site, which then opens the iTunes desktop app, and then loads up the iTunes store - always wait for this process to complete before purchasing anything)... purchases made directly on iPhones/iPads/iPods don't count, though you can set them up for Automatic Downloads, in that any content you buy on that iTunes account on the desktop computer is automatically downloaded to your linked iDevices - works well enough! :D

So you go through that process an then redeem a gift card? And that counts for earning points?

Correct - their system awards VA points regardless of whether the transaction is funded with a credit card or iTunes gift card - one of the VA shopping partners that *actually* awards points ;)

I have been buying BOGOF ITunes card offer from Harvey Norman whenever they come out with the offer. But usually the offer only last 1-2 days. You would need to monitor oz bargain website.

Slightly incorrect. You get a voucher *or* points earn, not both. You can change your earning style once a month on the EDR website, but it's an either/or situation not both. You'll only earn points on a CC if you pay for your fuel with that.

Of course, you could do 2 x $30.01 transactions, and not scan your EDR for one of them, giving you a voucher on a receipt, and your EDR card with QFF earn. That does require two transactions though :)

Whats incorrect, the OP got a fuel voucher that will turn into points when they use it at WW petrol, it does not read as getting 8c off and points!

My reading is that they thought they would but I mis-read apparently :)

I don't believe that any voucher doubles up the points? I know I've not been receiving double on my EDR card when scanned for fuel.

The standard 4cpl vouchers earn 2 points per litre of fuel purchased. Vouchers issued through promotions that are above this value are halved to obtain the points amount (ie an 8cpl voucher = 4 points/litre instead, and a 15cpl voucher = 7.5 points/litre) :)

The vouchers are fuel discount *only*. The only way you can earn QFF points is to have your EDR card associated with your QFF account (and of course, any points from paying with a credit card).
*edit* Didn't realise vouchers above 4c also changed to 50% of the rate to points!

If you use a paper receipt to claim your discount, you get the discount. If you use your EDR when you are shopping, your voucher is loaded onto the card, and should not be printed on the paper receipt. Then, when you scan your EDR card purchasing fuel you get either the discount *or* the points.

The option to receive discounted fuel or earn QFF points is set online in your EDR profile via their website. It's an either-or situation, not both (at least i've never received both). If i'm doing it wrong please advise as I'd like both :)

All that's being said is that the higher the fuel discount voucher (loaded to your card), obviously the more points you'll make on fuel.

Nothing has suggested earning both a discount and points at the same time.

Right. OK I missed this in the T&C's:

If you swap a 4 cent per litre Fuel Saving Voucher for Qantas Frequent Flyer points, you will receive 2 Qantas Frequent Flyer points per litre instead of 4 cents fuel saving per litre off the standard purchase price of fuel. If you have other Fuel Saving Offers loaded on your card greater than 4 cent per litre you will receive half the amount of the fuel savings as Qantas Frequent Flyer points when you redeem the Fuel Saving Voucher. For example a 10c per litre Fuel Saving Voucher will be swapped for 5 Qantas Frequent Flyer points per litre, or a 20c per litre Fuel Saving voucher will be swapped for 10 Qantas Frequent Flyer points per litre.

I'll crawl back into my corner now. Sorry for the disturbance!

There's also no doubling of points due to the doubling of the fuel discount voucher either. I don't see how the 8c/L equates to any bonus FF points?

When you receive a fuel voucher on your EDR card you can use it to receive whatever the value is, per litre, off fuel.

If you've enabled a preference you can halve that value and get points instead.

For example: a standard 4¢/L voucher earns 2 points/L. However an 8¢/L earns 4 points/L. I used a 30¢/L voucher I earned over Christmas to make 15 points/L when filling up in January.

In this case, making more points per litre would seem like a bonus.

Edit: glad you've got it!
