Apple keep 30% of revenue, so they are only down $4 per card sold, which goes to the App developer. They probably think this is a good marketing investment

Apple dont keep 30% of the revenue, you need to factor in the margin for the seller as well which in the case of woolworths is around 20%, that means a much bigger loss than $4. The interesting thing was the lack of instore promotion, suggesting it was a marketing exercise to assess different advertising methods, as the other promos were also not ticketed in store.

Glad some AFF'ers got to take advantage, now if you need a notebook for your travelling to keep all your itunes organised, perhaps the Protege R400 tablet with three year warranty currently at HT for $895 might be of interest, its two years old technology but the tablet function might come in handy for those wishing to work with the dreaded seat recliner in front of you :D

If you refer to the apple website and look at the information for App developers. The developer gets 70% of the revenue, the other 30% must go to Apple. So if I buy a $20 app for iphone via itunes, then the developer gets $14 hence the missing $4 I mentioned, so with seller margin that get it up to $8 missing per $20 card. But maybe Apple and BigW agreed to a different margin on this promo.

Of course, what I forgot was the margin on songs sold via iTunes. I would guess that Apple makes more on songs than on iphone apps.

Nice find on the R400.

I am sure someone is taking a bit of a bath, a true loss leader, and as a result its unlikely we will see it again! Ironically it came the same week as some on this board were lementing the fact that in Australia we could not benefit from such deals like the presidential gold coin deal, I wonder how many new useless apps @ $20 will pop up that appeal to a very limited audience so their authors can make $14 from a $10 expenditure, or how many $20 cards pop up on Ebay for higher than $10, and you get FF points :)

They make about 3¢ a song sold on iTunes, it’s never been about the music. I think they just about break even on songs. The idea is they actually sell more iPods and iPhones as they’ve locked people into buying iTunes songs.

When the app store launched they said they’d take 30% of the app sale price.

I don’t know how much retailers get from selling iTunes credit, but I’d guess it to be very little.

So they would only put the tranactions through 3 cards at a time, i.e. $30 per transaction = no points.
This is correct, though they used to give you points based on how much you spent in one store per day.

Not sure about the total spend per day thing. But I'm almost annoyed enough to ring up and ask for the points. I did want to spend $100 in one transaction. It was their limitation that prevented that from happening.

Apparently one of the stores over here in the UK currently has 2x£15 gift cards for £20 ... hmm, should I buy a heap, then onsell via ebay? Not entirely sure I want the hassle, but hey ...
