Is this normal?

My daughter flew from Coffs Hbr to Sydney this afternoon. No problems, a little bumpy, she reported, but the forecast storms didn't seem to eventuate.

The plane landed adjacent to T2, the passengers were offloaded but not allowed into the terminal. They then waited for 20 minutes in the (quite cold) early evening weather, on the tarmac, until they were allowed to walk into the terminal.

I have flown this route innumerable times but this has never happened to me. Either we get on a bus or we stay on the aircraft until clearance to disembark has been given.

Has anyone else experienced this?
 
Perhaps they forgot their key card to open the door to the terminal? I had a similar experience on the aero-bridge recently where the crew member had forgotten their key card and had to go back on the plane to pick it up just to open the door.

20 minutes does seem a little excessive though.
 
Bus didn't turn up, they tried to arrange a bus but eventually had to go with the walk to terminal?
 
Were there flashing yellow lights on the buildings in operation all over the airport, when its unsafe for people to move on the tarmac owing to weather conditions these will be turned on, and without ground staff to provide the required escort pax cannot be moved.

Had this happen once on a Rex flight but we were kept on the plane for~10 minutes.

I can understand all this but I would have thought that the pax would be kept on the plane, not out in the southerly wind.

In DRW if there is a 5 mile warning in place no airline personnel are permitted on tarmac & must vacate area immediately once this warning is declared.

Pax arriving on flights during this time must remain onboard until 5 mile warning is lifted as engineers obviously cannot 'meet' the aircraft, plug in headsets etc irrespective of whether arrival is on a stand-off bay or at an aerobridge.

Not sure if this was the case in SYD but if there was lightning about, standing out on the tarmac for 20 minutes is the last thing I'd want to be doing given the circumstances!

It's very weird, but no worries, these things happen.
