Is this luggage repair acceptable?

I'm tending to let annoyances go over my head these days. (Except when a certain 'new' poster posts their rubbish).

Well, if you never ask, you will never, never know...I give it a 50:50 chance of success :)

I agree with you, although to be honest I doubt I could be bothered chasing it. The repair looks like the sort of thing my great grandma did to stockings post WWII. I'd re-gift that suitcase to someone else in the family and get myself another.

So if that is not acceptable as a repair, would the friend of the OP be after a brand new case?

Many thanks to all who have responded.
The case owner was looking for a replacement as the case was so new and part of a set which is not available locally. The repairer advised as it was repairable, it was repaired and the warranty would be preserved as it was done by an authorised repairer.
She is still very, very pi55ed off, will reluctantly take the case back and has vowed never to fly with that "other ME" airline again.
I told her she should have a look at some of my cases, and they can't stay new forever.
I suggested she take another trip and use the repaired case to get there and she could replace it and leave the repaired one as a gift for the hotel staff.
I will not pass her reply on!!!

Thanks for the update. I think maybe expectations need to be reduced. The only time luggage stays pristine is when it doesn't get used. Its downhill from then on.

Whilst I can sympathise with the case owner, it looks like this is as good as it gets. As you say the case was repaired by an authorised agent and the warranty still stands. It is a pity that the patch is not of a fabric more like the original though as the luggage is not available in Australia maybe this was the best they could come up with. Also a pity that the patch seems to be on the top of the case rather than the bottom as it will be seen more by the owner. I think the suggestion of gifting the case and buying a new one is the way to go if the owner can't stand the repair. They may be able to buy a replacement online.
For me, I don't do the matched luggage sets - reminds me a bit of Hyacinth 'Bouquet' and hers - what brand were they again? I have found that I like the products from different manufacturers seem to provide the mix I want.
Agree with most posters that after the first trip with new luggage, it's all downhill.

The repair looks OK to me but I may have pushed for a replacement as well.

Luggage should be handled with care. Not thrown onto luggage trolley from aircraft hold door. Or allowing golf bags to drag on the tarmac on the way to/from the aircraft hold.

Very poor.

Get the repair shop to do a matching patch on the other side. It will remove the visual imbalance.

My guess is that if a patch of the same material as the case was used it would be more likely to fray at the edges, which would soon look unsightly and probably be more prone to fail than the vinyl patch used. Looking at the damage I'm surprised the airline didn't just class it as wear and tear and wash their hands of it anyway. Maybe your friend should take a philosophical view because now that the case is obviously "used" she should think how much less stressful it will be the next time it gets damaged.

Baggage handlers will never take as much care of your belongings as you do. To them it's just bag number 3749 for the day. I put it in the same category as seeing your kids drive down the road for the very first time - you really hope they come back in the same condition as you left them but to stay sane you have to "let go" because it's completely out of your control once you wave them goodbye (or watch them disappear down the baggage chute). In both situations be happy that you do actually get them back with contents intact.

Edit: Recently had a relatively new and previously undamaged hardcase smashed on a HBA - MEL flight. Virgin paid me half the cost of replacement as it was a used item. Maybe their offer would have been better if I had status with them or I was flying J but it wasn't worth the (wasted) effort of quibbling about it. At least the pax in this case didn't find herself out of pocket.

My new bag (roll-aboard) has done two trips and already has scuff marks down the sides and a dark patch on the front. If they are protecting their contents then they are doing their job. I understand the disappointment that something new is damaged, b ut better the case than whats in it.
