Is this a chargeback situation?

Throwing this out to you all who are more experienced than I and asking what you'd suggest doing in this situation. (I made the bookings for my elderly father.)

Situation:

On 2 July I booked a room at a Mercure in Singapore. Confirmation email received immediately but later that day I received another email saying my payment had not come through and invited me to pay using another link. This email presented as spam and so I did nothing. Two days later I received another email advising me that my reservation had been cancelled becuase no money had arrived (despite having given card details at time of booking.

So, I rebooked the room, which was now $S30 more expensive. Confirmation email received immediately. No payment deducted. 12 days later pending charge appears on bank account. Following day the money is deducted.

Because of the difficulty with the first one, and suspecting this was a way of trumping up the hotel price, we saw a few days after the the second booking that it also hadn't gone through on the card so booked a room in another hotel altogther. Now we have two bookings for the same night, neither are refundable. So I emailed Mercure to explain and was told that the rate was not refundable, the end.

Wondering what options we have here in your experience?
- try calling the hotel or emailing again?
- initiate a chargeback (have never don't that before). The card we used was a Macquarie Mastercard (works like a Visa Debit - you have to have money in your account to make a payment with it)?
- accept it as our loss?

Accor prepaid reservations often fail overseas, it’s best to reach out to the hotel for confirmation if they have not reached out to you. Sometimes the hotel does not even get your card details.

Sorry @FlyingFiona but sounds like you’re out of luck with this one. If you didn’t call Mercure to confirm the (second) booking before making the alternative booking, that’s unfortunately going to be on you.

Have you tried calling the other property to ask if they’ll let you cancel because you’ve double booked?
