Hi punters!

I am currently in the US and have a Delta return flight booked in First class from LAX-RDU for which I will be getting some unknown Velocity Points. I have an option to buy AA First Class and for around $1000 ($1700 with tax back) I would pass the points required for Platinum status credit..

I wonder if people think this is a worthwhile 'investment'. I will be flying Qantas mainly domestic 2-3 times a month and will probably have 2-3 international flights to US/India and Europe for next year. Flying likely from BNE so no SYD or MEL first lounges for me ;). One advantage I see is that with only 1200 SC required to maintain Platinum, this would be easier to do...

Only you can answer the question to be frank, if it was me, no, its not worth it.

For sure.

Arrange your OS flights to depart via Syd, then you get the Flounge. Also you get better seat selection, domestically and internationally as a WP. Welcome to the club.

Its worth it if you do a lot of international flying, its also worth it if there are ****ups and you get stranded somewhere.

When I was in the states it was a breeze and I was re-routed several times.

$1000 is a lot for a couple of massages and lunches in the F lounge, if you even use it. Personally though, I'd pay $1000 so I didn't have to sit in Y. Can you get a refund from Delta for what you've paid, or is it not a refundable F fare?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

As markis10 pointed out, only you can answer that question. Would you be prepared to spend more time to fly via Melbourne or Sydney? What's the value of sitting in row 23 or row 4 vs further back? Or guesting 2 vs 1 at the Dom lounges.

I know people who were within 20 sc and didn't bother with an extra trip to get. I know others who've spent a lot on a DONE4 to get it.

For me I probably would just because WP provides the ability to request J classic awards which saves me thousands vs buying a J ticket.

Personally I have better things to spend $1000 on (e.g. 4 children, a wife, a house, a lifestyle etc). But I acknowldge that other regulars here would not hessitate to spend that amount to achieve/retain such elite status. Its a personal decision and I tend twoards the thought that if you have to ask then you should seriously consider your options. When it seems a "no-brainer" then go for it. The threshold between "careful consideration" and "no-brainer" is different for each person.

The question isn't "Is QFF Platinum worth $1000?", it should be "Is QF Platinum worth $1000 more than QF Gold?" as it appears Gold is not a problem for you. There's a nice warm fuzzy associated with it, no doubt. But to take full advantage, of things like the FCL and 100% points bonus (vs 75%), you really have to be flying internationally a lot. And whilst the FCLs are nice, for someone based in BNE you've got to ask are they really worth the diversion via SYD or MEL, if there are better direct services available?

As others have said - really a personal decision.

Having done 7 trips to the USA in the last 18 months, and 5 trips to India in the last 6 months I would suggest spending $1k of your own money really isn't worth it.

The Int F lounges in SYD & MEL are pretty nice, but you only get a few hours (if you're lucky) there each trip prior to departure. The F lounges in HKG & SIN aren't much better than the J lounges (and have more limited opening times).

In the US, the LAX departure F lounge is well known for crowding & poor internet connection and in DFW there is a QFF lounge (haven't been there so don't know what is is like) or if flying to LAX the only access is to the AA Lounge.

In India, ..... well, you will be severely disappointed by the lounge offerings. I would suggest the $1k would be better utilized in avoiding having to go there in the first place.

YES! go for it :p

There is some value to the soft landing too - if your flying drops off, you do have an extra year at Gold - saves a year of QP perhaps?
