Hi all. Mrs TK needed to put her AKL-BNE-TSV return into credit due to the travel pause between NZ and QLD.This was a Biz Sale (I) fare around $NZ 1500. She will travel next year.

Is it possible to use part of a flight credit? eg AKL-BNE-TSV. There is a Biz sale for outbound dates, but not yet for the return. But I'd hate to book a one-way and then forfeit the remainder!

The T&C for the credit note seem a bit contradictory - the ticket was purchased on 09 May 2021.

Anybody have any insights into what would happen with a one-way booking...?

"Qantas Flight Credits can only be redeemed on bookings:
  • Where the new fare amount (which excludes carrier charges, fees and taxes) is equal to or higher than the original fare and the conditions of the new fare are met, except if your original booking was made on or before 31 July 2021, where your Flight Credit can be used for multiple bookings. Any applicable fare difference will apply. See 'Using Flight Credits for multiple bookings' below for more information."

"Qantas Flight Credits can't be redeemed on bookings:
  • With a lower value than the Flight Credit value, except if your original booking made on or before 31 July 2021 [yes] , where your Flight Credit can be used for multiple bookings. Any applicable fare difference will apply. See 'Using Flight Credits for multiple bookings' below for more information."

Yes so what it's saying is you must redeem for fares of equal or greater value BUT you can spend less than the credit value and a residual credit will be issued (unless under $2 and they used to not issue ones for that low amount iirc).

so, if those biz sale fares are offered with the credit, but the total is less than the credit value then a new one should be issued under current rules.

(happy to be corrected on this)

Not Quite - the booking was made before 31st July 2021, so it can be used on "lower" fares -in fact ANY fare ex NZ.

If the total new booking is less than the value of the credit (by more than $2) then a credit for the residual will be issued.

However, you may be able to get your credit converted to a "TravelPass" which can be used over multiple flight bookings. I was able to get a flight credit switched to a travel pass (and have DSCs attached to it).

Hi Serfty, thanks for this.

I remain concerned that if I booked AKL-TSV one way, then the residual balance ($NZ700-ish) won't be valid for a TSV-AKL return since the flight isn't originating in the country the Credit is issued for ... or am I overthinking things?!

Unfortunately the Credit is valid for 1 year from original booking, so perhaps I just need to wait another 3 months until the the needed travel period comes up and a simple return can be booked. My luck would be that there would be no sale Biz fares when that happens...

Cheers again. I'll need to discuss dates with Mrs TK - she'd prefer to be in TSV during the NZ Winter!

Meantime, please keep COVID away from MEL - I have a weekend Gold Status match return flight in mid-Aug (Sat-Sun) that I would really like to complete !!

Good thinking to catch the currency issue. Yep the credit wouldn't work (most likely) for ex-AU if originally ex-AKL. annoying for sure. Glad you didn't get caught in that pickle!

Just out of curiosity, was there a fee to convert your flight credit to a travel pass ?

No, I just called up and asked. They cancelled the credit and sent through the travel pass details within a few hours for the same amount.

At least you can get some use out of your jandals in winter. 😉

The website doesn't say, but I assume this is an Australian product in $A? I suspect not applicable, but thanks for the idea.

Possibly, but cant hurt to ask if they can offer the same in NZD?

I was having a read of the travel pass conditions where it states: “the fare conditions from your original booking no longer apply once you’ve converted your flight booking or Flight Credit to a travel pass”.

So I am wondering if its possible to convert the credits from a non-refundable flight to a travel pass and then use the travel pass to book a refundable flight and obtain a refund. Have some flight credits that I’m unlikely to be able to use before they expire.

It wasn’t possible to use the flight credit to book a refundable flight and then get a refund as the conditions from the original non-refundable flight still applied.

Qantas refunds go back to the original form of payment. If you cancel (or Qantas does) a flight paid with a travel pass it will go back onto the travel pass.
