So with the recent Double Status Credit offer from Qantas, I was wondering if I should chase down the Gold Status.
Right now I have 410 SC and would be needing another 290 to attain Gold Status which I can get by a one way MEL-SYD(J)-CHC(F).

However I am wondering if I should really chase down the Gold Status considering I always travel Business Class either via Points or Cash. I don't always fly Qantas. I mix it up with EY, EK, QF and SQ.
My only Motivation to go for Qantas Gold Status is to get a better Award availability on Qantas Metal.

What do you guys think ? Is it worth getting the Gold Status ?

Cheers

If you think better award availability will save you a lot of cash (covering most/all of your run) then go for it.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Is there a huge difference in Award Availability between Silver and Gold Members ?

Only you can answer that question at the end of the day. What is the value of SG to you? And then is the cost of obtaining it more or less than that value.

Where do you usually fly? That might help determine if it's worth spending. And is it possible that you qualify based on your normal travel without actively chasing it? As in maybe pay cash for your next booking instead of points.

As a lowly Qantas Bronze member, I too am interested to know how much difference there is in award availability between Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum members. I assume this only applies to award tickets on QF metal.

In terms of your status plans, I would think there's not a whole lot of difference if you usually travel in Business Class anyway. However perhaps the best way to know would be to actually go for Gold this year and see whether you value the benefits over the next 12 months. I travel mostly domestically and mostly with Virgin Australia but am starting to think I would be better off making an effort to gain (at least some) status with Qantas given that their international network flys to all of the places I want to visit over the next 24 months.

The difference can be pretty significant for Qantas operated flights. Gold (and above) members do get access to more premium seats during the initial release (especially on popular long-haul routes) around a year out.

I've also been lucky to snag a last minute award from CBR to SYD thanks to QF gold status. I had to be in SYD at a particular time, and the fares were $300+ and no award seats showing. I logged in to QFF and searched again, and voila - a classic reward seat was available on the flight I wanted.

There's no difference in award availability on flights operated by partner airlines.

Award availability is hit or miss for us golds. I was successful J to F MEL-LAX two weeks ago but missed out LAX-MEL for the return leg.
Lounge access, priority checkin and extra SCs and points are worth it though.

The double SC offer made me think about it. I'm about to requalify SG with VA and am LTS with QF but haven't flown much with them in the past few years (SCs=0) so it would take a couple of JASA bookings on the old TSV-BNE-DRW-BNE-TSV route to get me back to Gold. What a loss to us all.

In your case, I wouldn't go for it if you're not going to do that trip anyway. When travelling business class, the difference is miniscule. I'd say you'd be paying the full cost of that status run for maybe one extra award flight next year that you would have otherwise had to pay for and no other noticeable benefits.

There have been several threads on this topic in the last few years. SC has it most benefit if you fly international (generally with another person) as you have OW benefits.

In economy. If flying business, it doesn't really have any benefits anywhere save for lounge access domestically in the US and the occasional extra QF award showing up.

You can opt for the 50 SC bonus when you get 500 SC's, so you only need to chase 240 SCs....

Husband has been gold for two years now and already qualified for next year. I just attained silver of our return flight to South Africa.
Better seat selection on booking, lounge access and other priorities are worth it. Also tempted by double SC offer, however the flights we need to book back to South Africa are double what they were a couple of weeks ago (all classes, we book PE and always apply for points upgrade to Business on booking), so we think we will be waiting for flight specials and taking a chance on SC offers later.

I'd probably go for it as once you're QF SG (OWS) you can then apply for a status match to an equivalent program with Star Alliance eg TK or Skyteam eg AZ.

www.statusmatcher.com

Check out the cost as it may be cheaper to buy the flights on the QF NZ site CHC/xSYD/MEL then either use points or a cheap ticket in whY to position MEL/CHC.

There may be a time in the future when you're flying other airlines in these alliances in whY and besides having lounge access you'll also qualify for free luggage allowance eg in the USA where you may have had to pay.
