Is it possible to return from SE Asia to East Coast AUS on day flights?

I'd completely forgotten about that article, but now I remember when it was published!

I've been going back and forth to SEAsia from Australia for years, and 18 months ago relocated to Malaysia. So now I go back and forth to Australia from SEAsia.

Invariably the overnight flights to Australia are my choice as it allows a full day wherever I am, followed by a meal in the lounge, a sleep and a morning arrival into AU. The frees up the entire day on both ends.

In the other direction, MH has quite a few overnight flights from various ports in AU to KUL which again are useful for the above reasons.

Worth noting I (mostly) travel for work purposed and generally in J class. Perhaps if my travel was more leisure oriented I would think differently.

I am based in SIN and have been for almost 17 years (originally from Melbourne). I have zero business travel back to Australia, so it is all leisure/VFR. Since covid finished, I've definitely moved to day flights (a ratio of 5:1 daytime to overnight),

But I don't sleep well on planes, even in business, and for most of that time I most people I dealt with were in Europe or the Americas, so arriving in MEL at 8-9pm (5-6am on US east coast) proves to be less disruptive than departing SIN at 8-9pm...

Fair enough. I can generally get 4 to 5 hours sleep on a SIN to SYD/MEL or 5 to 6 on a KUL to SIN/MEL if travelling in J. And most of my work is SEA/Australia.

I find no matter what departures out of SIN / KUL back to Australia is just a smidge too short to sleep properly even if you can.

7.5h flight time, take away 30mins for take off and another 1h for landing usually means 6h at best - realistically youll have a bit of time to wind down and thats if you can sleep through the cutlery clanking of supper service/ breakfast service. If you want either of those (or both) it's even less time.

East Asia with ~10h flight time however is pretty ok for this and I can usually get 6h+ hours and have time to wind down (and maybe catch a breakfast).
 
I recently enjoyed the SQ SIN-SYD daytime flight SQ211 in Premium Economy and it was a great experience. Departure from SIN wasnt too early (breakfast in the Gold lounge at SIN), pretty quick flight at just under 7 hours. Landed in SYD at 8pm, so I was home at 930pm and was absolutely fine the next day. The flight was full too. I usually feel terrible after the overnight flights from Asia to Sydney as I struggle to sleep even in J (I am 6foot4 tall).
I will be using the SQ daytime flight from now on I think.
 
I agree but I wonder if this is changing? Historically premium classes were full of business travellers and coming back from London you could lose 1 working day by leaving LHR at night, arriving in SYD/MEL 2 days later early AM. Or, take the lunchtime departure from Heathrow and lose 2 working days.

In reality these days I think those travelling for business who can only lose 1 working day must be very small, being able to work in Sydney after arriving at 6am on QF1 would be tough - even flying First!

With more premium leasisure travellers replacing business travellers i wonder if this will change.

Excellent post. I find it much harder (even in J) to sleep on planes than on trains., although I managed five hours when in J recently on one airline, but only two on another.

So not related to Asia (Mods please split if appropriate), but hypothetically, if there were o/night train services between SYD<>MEL/BNE, that were better than the current services, I wonder if any business travellers would consider using them?

I mean, boarding at say 9pm, arriving at 7am, having a proper bed, meal, potentially even showers etc. I'd consider it, it might beat waking up at 4am to make a 6am flight then having to do a full days work after all that.
