I'm trying to figure out it if it's possible to return from SE Asia to BNE/SYD/MEL on QF flights as day flights?

All direct flights seem to be overnight, but are any other combinations possible?

If you throw JQ into the mix, there are some others.

A pseudo day flight is SIN-PER-SYD/MEL/BNE on QF72, then o/n in a hotel bed before flying east at your leisure. JQ/QF DPS-PER-SYD can be done in one day.

If QF flights include codeshare ie non QF metal, MH does daily daytime flights to SYD and MEL from KUL and you may be able to connect from other S E Asian ports on the MH network that QF sell seats on.

The old QF32 leaving SIN at 0830 arriving in SYD at 1900(?) was perfect, particulary when a points upgrade to F came through. For whatever reason it was always easy to get upgraded to F on that flight, and the all day menu was fantastic.

They had a similar day flight from HKG to MEL I think as well.

Who knows, prehaps the existing LHR-SIN-SYD flight will be retimed once Sunrise starts and we may get a nice QF day flight again from Asia

It’s a commercial reality for QF that for some reason day flights ex Asia are not popular, I don’t know why as they are my preference. Not a fan of a few hours sleep overnight as is the case for many departure points.

I agree but I wonder if this is changing? Historically premium classes were full of business travellers and coming back from London you could lose 1 working day by leaving LHR at night, arriving in SYD/MEL 2 days later early AM. Or, take the lunchtime departure from Heathrow and lose 2 working days.

In reality these days I think those travelling for business who can only lose 1 working day must be very small, being able to work in Sydney after arriving at 6am on QF1 would be tough - even flying First!

With more premium leasisure travellers replacing business travellers i wonder if this will change.

I think with the advent of inflight wifi, and more spacious and private business class seats, the "workdays" lost during flights is perhaps not as significant as it used to be. On day flights, those who need to be can be quite productive if they want to.

Perhaps also one of the reasons why overnights on QF are appealing for their customers (who are predominantly Australian based) is also personal, to get home to their family as quickly as possible after completing their work/business away, without the need for an extra day away. Less so, perhaps, for those based in Asia whether you take the day flight down to Australia or work for the day and then go to airport, either way you are "away" from your family for the whole day.

Do you have a reference for that?

Presumably the main reason QF flights ex Asia are redeyes is the plane has left Oz in the morning and turns around to return home (invariably as a redeye). The weird exception has always been Tokyo (redeye up and back).

I actually don’t buy the argument that a business person doesn’t like day flights because they lose a day. They’ve lost the day getting to Asia. If it held true, why doesn’t QF have late night departures ex Oz to Asia?

Answering my own question - probably because they’d arrive way too early even if sneaking out of SYD just before curfew… SQs 22:30 flight arrives in SIN at 03:30! CX arrives in HKG at 05:00. Neither business friendly but generally good for onward connections.

The QF32 example mentioned earlier was coming in from LHR, so didn’t have those constraints. But a pleasant way to return to Oz!
