Yes it is, the points and SC's will be awarded for the original class booked.
Note that some of these upgrade requests need to be made via the call centre and may not be able to be requested online.

Whoa, thanks for the quick response!

Is there a way around that? I.e. to earn business class SCs without paying the exorbitant amount required to fly Qantas business class.

It just seems like on all the forums, people are getting more Sc and paying a lot less than the numbers I'm getting when I look it up on the Qantas booking system

No, the points will always be based on the class purchased, rather than the class actually flown.

As to the amounts people pay, there are lots of variables. QF regularly has sales where the dollar amounts required for J tickets (well, actually I class tickets) are much lower than normal, e.g. the current Business Companion sale, where the fares are about half the full J price. Plus governments and large businesses have negotiated their own contract rates, often with considerable savings. Then there's the RTW J fares, which are pretty good value. And sometimes travel agents are able to access other discounts.

And then there's always expedia Brazil !! (long story)

Unfortunately it finished 2 days ago. Was lucky enough to use it to book flights to celebrate Mrs B's bday. Make sure you sign up to receive the emails that notify you about specials or just keep an eye out on the forums here. Great advice given out by all the different posters!
