Is A380 F worth the effort?

With EY seats, make sure that you are talking to Fiji. There is a known issue with the AA (USA) call centre being unable to see EY availability.

AA Australia can see similar availability to EY website but it's important to search each flight separately before calling.
For example: MEL-AUH-LHR can show seats available but when searching MEL-AUH then AUH-LHR on same dates can be seats available on first sector but none on the second and that's what AAgents will see on their system.

On board EY455 at the moment. I must say the service was exceptional and probably one of the best first class experience both in soft and hard product. QF still has the better mattress but that would be the only chink. Loads of space especially we have two apartments joined and very private. The shower makes the journey so much more comfortable. Have I mentioned the food? Loads of food, loads of choices and we are just getting spoilt. Wonderful hospitality and it is actually the cheapest F ex Australia to LHR.

MEL-AUH-LHR on EY are two separate flights (unlike QF9) therefore priced as two awards:
MEL-AUH 60K in F
AUH-LHR 40K in F

You can add domestic connection on QF J and pay only the taxes. You can also add intra-euro connection (depends on distance).

does this always happen, or is it a case of YMMV?

Damm, dont quite have the spare to do it.
It's a tough choice between QF F or JL F at 80K and EY F at 100K.
The 100K feels better, though, if you do MEL/SYD-auh-MLE-auh-LHR ;)

It seems you can travel via Doha. Do they allow Doha and Asia or is it one or the other?

One or the other. A "third region" is sometimes allowed, but never a fourth AFAIK. So South Pacific to Europe via Asia 1/2 or Doha.

When couldn't find apartment direct to AUH I've tried SYD-NRT-AUH-DOH-CDG all in F.
They allowed this route, no problem but it was priced more than 100K, not really good value.
