I will be travelling to London in March and deciding between flying from BNE or going via SYD. Is it worth the effort to go through SYD for the long haul?

Yes!
I do it every time myself.

It's not such a big effort flying QF Dom J and you get the bonus of a proper J lounge.

Yes. F apartments on the EY A380 set the standards IMHO :)

What about on the return leg? Do you stay in SYD overnight or try to make it back on the last flight?

Yes. My wife was so happy when she saw First on the 380 last year :) As a "once in a life time" opportunity it's up there with Singapore Suites to LHR

Yes, yes, yes, yes and yes.

Although the first suites on the 787 are very nice and the service is still excellent.
The A380 first apartments just have an absolute wow factor that is currently unrivalled.
Unless you can afford The Residence ...

Did it last month to Abu Dhabi. Absolutely amazing. I partook of the shower and hoped I did not look like a d***head doing so, but the staff offered and it was really cool to get off the flight freshly showered and shaved. DO IT!!!

Thanks for the replies. Booked and confirmed travelling through Syd taking the A380 :). It would be the first time with Etihad. Is the lounge in Sydney worthwhile hanging around?

It's a nice business (not First) lounge but nothing special.....I would save my tummy for the food and drink offerings onboard :)

Adding my vote to this: Etihad's A380 first class is amazing. Quite aptly named The Apartments, it's more like an actual room than a seat/suite – almost 4m², and I felt that alone made quite a difference to the experience. Lounge is as kpc says a quite decent lounge, arguably one of the best business lounges at SYD due to the a la carte menu but I didn't note any service differentiation when flying first class. Onboard meals are superb, and not just what's on the menu – the chef will whip up pretty much anything 'different' you fancy given the ingredients on hand. IMHO, easily the world's best first class flying experience.

F is ALWAYS worth travelling a little further to catch!

Then again I love flying so others may disagree.

If you have never done F, either do it before you die OR never think about F every again!

We flew Apartments on an AA redemption (60K ea) and were pretty disappointed when the AAdvantage devaluations came out (effective next month). Then I finally paid attention to the Virgin redemption rates for Apartments. Awesome, couple of credit card applications (each) and we're almost there again :) so twice in a lifetime opportunity !

In this case F is actually close to home but definitely worth traveling little further for apartments ;)

So from now on you can say: If you have never done F, don't worry about it, there is much better product to fly before you die :p

How hard is it to get it on redemption with no status? I have a couple of million points a year from Amex so need to find ways of using it. When I pull out the redemption, I couldn't seem to see any. I might be doing it all wrong :D.

My personal experience was with a close-in booking (couple of weeks out if I remember correctly). e.g. there are 2 Apartments on tonights A380 out of Sydney but that's probably a bit close in for most people :). There are a few Apartments during the last week of Feb.

Status doesn't come into as far as I know. Find the flight on Etihad website, call AA or Virgin and give them the details....

Now do I want to go to AUH for the weekend tonight now that I know there are a couple of Apartments..... :)
