Is a codeshare ever really confirmed?

I was 'confirmed' for several months on AY's BA16 codeshare tomorrow SYD-SIN, connecting on to AY82 in SIN. This morning I logged on to check my booking and saw that I was in Business despite an economy booking - great. Then an hour later I received an updated itinerary saying I was now on QF81 in economy, leaving 6 hours earlier. I rang - Finnair told me BA advised BA16 is not operating tomorrow, hence the rebooking. I rang BA and they confirmed they are operating, on time, the AY codeshare is valid, they had not actioned anything on my booking, but the flight is now sold out in economy. I went to Finnair's office (around the corner from work) to get to the bottom of it as I really wanted to have the morning free and they showed me BA16 on their screen - NOOP ie. not operating. They did their best to get me on another later codeshare on CX etc but no availability, and advised me that they had been rebooking many others onto QF this morning based on BA's NOOP advice.

So my question is what does 'confirmed' actually mean if the operating carrier can bump you, seemingly because they have decided they can sell the seats themselves rather than via the codeshare? Whilst I was successfully rebooked, an extra 6 hours transit is a pain if there were no operational issues to blame...

Interesting issue and I wonder if you are entitled to EU261 compensation for your troubles? AY advises the flight has been cancelled, they are an EU carrier, code sharing on an EU carrier, flying to the EU. They have rerouted you on a flight leaving 6 hours early. I would be putting in a claim!

As I expected BA16 operated as usual and on time today. I think I will have to have words with Finnair when I get back.
