But the 7kg is not going to be around much longer - it will disappear Feb 2027
Basically it will stop weighing cabin luggage.
Anything you can fit under your seat is free - no weight limit but size limit . It has to fit under the seat or 40x30x20cm
They will charge $26 for any thing else that fits in the overhead - but not weight limited.
With that $26 will come priority boarding so you get first dibs at the overhead storage bins.

I've gone on many trips with just 7kg. It's not for everyone but very doable.

If you have light weight luggage or canvas bags/ backpacks for a weekend trip.. easy.

If you are trying to save $40 on checked baggage for a week long trip.. forget about it.

For me 7kg rarely makes sense unless it is a very short personal trip.

If it's anything overnight for work I will generally travel with 2 laptops, those alone in a personal item bag is pushing 4-5kg. So in the past when I have flown for work on JQ (won't do it again if I can avoid it), I have had to check luggage and only bring a personal item.

Will be interesting to see if when JQ changes their carry on weight rules if that transfers through to Virgin and QANTAS.

Weight of wheelie bag comes into this also… I’ve seen “carry on” bags that weigh 3kg! Forget 7kg one you pack a laptop, charger - heaven forbid a change of clothes and some personal items

They say 7kg, but I asked the staff walking the lines handing out fines what the leeway is and they say 8kg

If it’s a cold departure from say Melbourne I generally have the North Face thick jacket on so that can generally hide around 3-4kg on all the internal components.
