But the 7kg is not going to be around much longer - it will disappear Feb 2027
Basically it will stop weighing cabin luggage.
Anything you can fit under your seat is free - no weight limit but size limit . It has to fit under the seat or 40x30x20cm
They will charge $26 for any thing else that fits in the overhead - but not weight limited.
With that $26 will come priority boarding so you get first dibs at the overhead storage bins.

I've gone on many trips with just 7kg. It's not for everyone but very doable.

If you have light weight luggage or canvas bags/ backpacks for a weekend trip.. easy.

If you are trying to save $40 on checked baggage for a week long trip.. forget about it.

For me 7kg rarely makes sense unless it is a very short personal trip.

If it's anything overnight for work I will generally travel with 2 laptops, those alone in a personal item bag is pushing 4-5kg. So in the past when I have flown for work on JQ (won't do it again if I can avoid it), I have had to check luggage and only bring a personal item.

Will be interesting to see if when JQ changes their carry on weight rules if that transfers through to Virgin and QANTAS.

Weight of wheelie bag comes into this also… I’ve seen “carry on” bags that weigh 3kg! Forget 7kg one you pack a laptop, charger - heaven forbid a change of clothes and some personal items

If it’s a cold departure from say Melbourne I generally have the North Face thick jacket on so that can generally hide around 3-4kg on all the internal components.

I generally fly in a trench coat and it's pretty amazing what you can fit into the massive internal pockets without anybody noticing. I've flown with pretty much my entire camera bag stuffed into the pockets as well as a nice bulky power bank. Easily 4-5kg.

I saw a FB ad for a similar themed but much bigger jacket basically made of pockets. It had a toothbrush compartment, pockets big enough for towel, jumper, camera etc and folded into a satchel type tote that could be also used as a carry on bag. Looked a bit like Inspector Gadget.

I feel like jackets designed as storage is where you get into the "pushing your luck" territory. If you're wearing a normal jacket nobody is really going to call you out (regardless of how much you have hidden away in your pockets), if you're wearing a jacket that is nothing but pockets you do risk being called out on the spirit of the rules.

7kgs + Personal Bag is easily doable if you aren't going to be using one of them 5kg roller bags. These days I've taken to carrying a light weight 30L duffel bag for my clothes and then a small backpack for the computer, external monitor, powerpacks, cables, charges, headphones. Works fine for a few nights away.

If the airline started charging for carry-on bags, then it'd be a function of the price versus time to check-in and wait for said bags, which is on a per trip basis - direct airport to office, then I'd want time, airport to hotel the night before work - I'd be happy to wait.

Oh I agree... I just never saw a portable one til I was in the US earlier this year - and it transpires we (our US offices) have a bunch we loan to people on their way to see clients (I so wanted to steal one)

I agree that 7kg + Personal bag is pretty easy, but the two together can get tricky quickly.

On top of my 99kg body
