So I grabbed iOS6 today onto two iPhones and an iPad and just coming to grips with the changes.

Anyone else updated already (excluding those who had legitimate and otherwise versions).

The biggest single improvement for me is putting bluetooth controls on the "front page" of settings.

I have yet to try the turn by turn navigation but the flyover feature of Maps is stunning - hopefully it hits more cities soon. So far have found flyover for Sydney and Melbourne in Australia

Now out of NDA, I think the biggest change is a new developer framework called UICollectionView. Most tech writers are too superficial to call it out so you may not have heard of it. It allows developers to easily create complex layouts and animated transitions. We'll begin to see apps with new unique interfaces using approaches like grids, cover flow, card stacks, shelves, dials & circles. There will be less reliance on table views and more creative interfaces by quality developers.

Also nice to check out is:

Night mode to not ring the phone for non VIPs at night

Passbook for your dynamic tickets and boarding passes. There's already an App Store section for supporting apps

Email VIP group

Map apps which vend special localised data to the maps app, things like public transport directions, walking tours etc

Updated my iPad. Can't update my iPhone because it is running the beta and therefore thinks that it is already running the latest version. But it isn't. You'd think they could get this stuff right by now. Not a huge fan of the new maps, was hoping it would be better before release, but there are some really nice new features.

Poor John from AusBT doesn't like the maps app one bit on ios6..

The thing is, he's not wrong.

One of the most powerful features of the old google maps was to type in a location, let the maps center and then type what you were looking for, for instance "woolworths". It would then show pins for all the Woolworth's stores surrounding the current location. This does not work on the Appple maps app.

It's a good thing that you can still get to google maps through the browser ;)

Maps seems to be good for finding Apple Stores and not much else...

I have just updated my iPad OTA and am still playing around with it. I am in Thailand and I just searched for Starbucks with local results coming up (I couldn't think of anything else). It may be that Aussie companies such as Woolworths will take a little time to be added. The map data is based on the TomTom source.

Sent from my iThing.
Why, because iCan.

Hmmm, just did a search for BKK and got Don Mueang Int. Airport!

Have they done the same for the wifi settings eg on front page?

Sorry it isn't a toggle for bluetooth - just a click through to bluetooth - saves hitting general then scrolling down for BT - a toggle would have been good (for both).

I've had ios6 for a month or so and I agree with him. Most attempts to use it for anything useful result in frustration.

I'm hoping the google maps app is out soon.

I updated the iPhone this morning (which was kind of pointless as I just received an email from Telstra to say that my iPhone 5.0 has now been shipped) but I cannot update my iPad. It keeps coming up as your software is up to date. iOS 5.1.1

The Good:
Siri updates outside US
camera/panorama

The Bad:
MAPS - WTF was apple thinking???
New lighter blue colour at the top of menus
Sluggish
Battery much worse
more useless icons (passbook) that can't be deleted or moved into a group
stocks app now unfriendly to those following more than 5 tickers
facetime over 3G has only worked if one person has wifi
app store flick through instead of easy scroll list

As much as I dislike much about AusBT, I'll agree the new iOS 6 maps *blow*. I've seen them get better and better from beta 1 (am a developer too) but it's still awful.

No public transport directions. Only references Yelp for searches (in AU at least, and although Yelp uses Sensis data, Sensis data is not a patch on Google's). eg, put in 'Paddington Station London' and it shows you a street. It's hopeless.

But it is improving. Up until the GM was release, Bourke Street Mall in MEL (the pedestrian/tram only part) and Swanston 'Walk' ddido not even appear. If you were using it for walking directions, you'd have assumed there was no way to get from Flinders to Latrobe street on foot if you were there.

No noticeable battery life difference on my iPhone 4 not even since beta 1. Have heard reports about the 4S though (but that battery life was always worse than the 4 anyway).

You aint kidding. Charged to 100% 2 hours ago. Been sitting on my desk doing nothing since then, now sitting at 66%. That is a terrible, and not something I saw with the beta.

I'm down to 10% from a full 100% less than 10 hours ago. No unusual activity and this is the first time my 4S has drained so hard...

If android wasn't so ugly I'd be switching in a heartbeat

I've been on iOS6 for a few weeks now, and have been on final since last week.

Haven't had any battery issues. I took my 4S off charge 12 hours ago, have used it throughout the day including as an ipod for 2 hours and the battery is at 60%. I'm happy with that.

(that's also with push mailboxes from two Exchange servers, plus a Google Apps mailbox)

Is something keeping the GPS active (arrow in top bar)?

Nope, and I've not only owned iPhone's for years, but I'm an iOS developer so I've got a fair idea of how they work. Will have to keep an eye on it, because beta 4 didn't seem to have this problem.
