Following a recent Jetstar Business Class flight from Bali to Brisbane, my wife encountered a faulty seat in 1A. Despite notifying the aircrew, the seat malfunctioned, causing it to recline abruptly and the footrest to remain unresponsive. Unfortunately, due to capacity constraints, we couldn't be relocated.

During the flight, my wife reclined her seat after the meal service, inadvertently causing the individual in seat 2C (behind me, not behind her in 2A) to spill his wine. Not so fast? But JQ need to provide a safe environment which ought to include monitoring pax and their alcohol intake. Seeing as though they served at least one alcoholic drink to 2C they've contributed to his condition and actions. Perhaps a comparative example to illustrate my rationale may be that Dr guy that was injured on the United flight. He received a settlement from United not the law enforcement agency.

Agree, but an establishment serving alcohol has some culpability if they keep serving alcohol to an obviously intoxicated person (and that will be the rub) and the person then commits an assault (or similar). Not perhaps to the level of 'charges' though.

In a perfect world people would be responsible for their own behaviour but this is very much an imperfect world and that responsibility often has to move up the chain. All the arguments put forward in this thread seem reasonable.

Do we know JQ was serving alcohol to an already intoxicated passenger? Isn’t this supposed to follow RSA guidelines, which is a visible effect of intoxication? Otherwise everyone would be cut off after a single drink!

If the pax knew the seat was faulty, did they take sufficient care in reclining?

I don’t see how a seat reclining, 1A into 2C, could cause a drink to spill? The seats aren’t close enough for that in ordinary use. Tray tables are in the armrest, so can’t be affected by recline. Centre console is nowhere near close enough. What was 2C doing?
 
I'm not sure if my input helps, but I've accidentally done the same thing to a pax behind me on JQi 787 business class.

I went to recline my seat a little well after the meal service was over. The problem seems to be that with some JQi 787 J class seats, when you just want to recline a little, the seat jerks back into fully reclined mode.

In my case, my seat recline hit an object on the meal tray, that I think was pushed forward, of the pax behind. Maybe it was a laptop? They can be pretty high objects on the tray. Maybe it was glass? But whatever it hit, a drink of the pax behind then got spilled.

I could imagine that a laptop, if hit when on the tray, could then hit a glass elsewhere on the tray or on the armrest console?

I apologised as much as I could to the pax behind. And the crew mopped up.

But the pax directly behind was using the meal tray for other reasons than the meal.

And it seems a seat recline of the forward seat CAN hit objects on that tray - if those objects are high enough. And (maybe) if the tray is pushed fully forward?

I'm not entirely sure, but it happened!

Regardless, hit an object that causes a glass spill and who knows where the spill will go? Down, yes but maybe left or right first?
