Also seems to apply to International. Just got this email;

Hello Blackswan
Normally, not all fare types allow you to register for an upgrade using your Qantas Frequent Flyer points, however for a limited time we've waived this restriction.
This means that for your upcoming international trip which includes travel in Economy from LOS ANGELES to NEW YORK you are now eligible to use your points to register for a Flight Upgrade Award* from Economy to Business.

Points upgrades on inelligible fares

My wife and I have a booking for SYD-DFW return coming up in August.

The flight was booked during a sale when the route was first launched and the fare conditions state "Inelligible for Points Upgrade". However, today, I happened to click the "Upgrade" button under Manage My Bookings and, rather than seeing the usual message telling me that my ticket was inelligible for a points upgrade, I was instead brought through to the screen which allowed me to request an upgrade! (which I gladly requested).

Has anyone else experienced this? (i.e. achieveing an upgrade on an inelligible ticket?)

Can anyone tell me how Qantas prioritise points upgrades?
I'm SG and my wife is PS which will hopefully work in our favour, but we did nab some heavily discounted tickets (we paid $1000 each, for a return fare, which is about a $1000+ saving per ticket if you were to buy today).

I know Qantas are changing their rules around domestic points upgrades, but this is an international trip.

I received the same letter; needs to be done by July 1.

I am trying to check if it's valid for any booking (other than DFW) but the QF website is a SNAFU at the moment with the advance of red e-deal upgrades domestically.

For upgrade priority, there was good information a year or three ago that booking class was the main differentiator within status. See here: Since then Altea has been implemented and it would not be inconceivable for QF to be using a PAX's PCV as the within status differentiator these days (rather than booking class).

Note that "Time of request" has long disappeared from the T&C's of the program. I believe it was documented thus in/before 2005; but I have found no reference to that from a later time.

As far as chances go, check the loading out using E/F, KVS or the tip in post one of this thread.

The more I (for Business) class or T (for PE) available the greater your chances.

Re: Points upgrades on inelligible fares

Got the same email this morning (have a flight BNE-LAX booked for next Tuesday on a cheapie fare).

72K points discount economy to J, I'd almost be tempted except I'm travelling with 6 family members and I doubt they'd appreciate it if I buggered off to the pointy end of the plane while they slum it in whY.

I'm not sure it's worth upgrading out a PE exit row seat (in Economy) to PE (with a chance at Skybed) for 50K points [or to Business (with a chance of a First Class seat) for 80K].

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I agree! However I am very conservative with my points and try to squeeze every last drop out of them :D

re: Points upgrades on Red e-deals kicking in early & possibly including INT flights

So I was just having a look to see what it would cost to upgrade an upcoming flight. Can anyone see the major issues with the quoted costs?

PE to Business is 25,000

Economy to Business is 7,500 :)

I just can't even get the site to not fail when i try to access this for my BNE to HKG this weekend at the moment....

Re: Points upgrades on Red e-deals kicking in early "A Taste" (Domestic)

I got the same offer, except mine is for an international flight. To Auckland via Melbourne in September....

The site just won't load for me so I hope the offer doesn't disappear. Anybody know how many points it is to upgrade to business on that leg? I'm hoping the same deal will apply for the return to Sydney....

You can use the upgrade calculator for routes that Qantas operate: https://www.qantas.com.au/fflyer/do/dyns/upgradeCalculator

Received my email for my economy flight to London in July / August. Until 1st July i can upgrade these too.

Don't miss out!
To be eligible you must register your upgrade request online at qantas.com by 1 July 2011.
How to register your upgrade request using your points:
1. Login to xx_xx on qantas.com
2. Go to Your Bookings
3. Select Upgrade and follow the steps
Please remember that telephone requests are not eligible and that you can only register for an International Flight Upgrade Award from 90 days to 24 hours before your departure from your first port of origin. Also, if you travel on a Flight Upgrade Award, you'll earn points and Status credits for the fare you originally booked.

I didn't get the email, but my flights became eligible for upgrade. Put in a business request for QF108...dont have enough points for upgrades on QF93/94 and I've got exit row seats for those anyway... :D Never been in business class before so fingers crossed.

OK, I finally managed to get into my booking for the upgrade.

It's less expensive DFW-BNE than SYD-DFW (my booking connects at BNE with a domestic flight to MEL) (45K/72K) so I decided to go ahead and request.¹

It's showing J9 C9 D9 I9 W9 R5 T0 ... with 9 unallocated F seats in Business Class and 6 unallocated Skybeds in PE; so chances are reasonable for a seat upgrade.

¹ The Upgrade Zone Cut off is 8400 miles; SYD-DFW is 8,578 miles and DFW-BNE is 8,303 miles, even though the schedule has it ¾ hour longer (Great Circle Mapper)

Indeed as you are entitled. I will never UG from Perth, but may there.

Of course International routes are where the best value lies!! especially out of PE to J.

Thanks for the post, I received the email for SYD-AKL but wouldn't bother upgrading as already in row 4 on 73H. Just logged onto Shreks account and requested upgrade for kids in Sep BKK-LHR from whY to PE. It doesn't seem to allow me to request both PE and J upgrades with N/A appearing beside J ???
Anyway, thanks once again as I had incorrectly assumed this was only for the flights mentioned in the email :)

Can u check seat availability on 20 July DFW-BNE, currently have two exit rows in PE, might go for the offer as its a long long flight...
Cheers
